Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 03/10/2026There is no attention paid to gender in Christianity until c. 1995. Neither the patristics nor the medievals gave it any substantial hought as far as I can see; and those few who did--Gregory of Nyssa being the most important--are far from providing aid and comfort to the gender essentialists. 130
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I sat in the basement apartment of my closest friend, a few blocks from Parliament Hill, watching those results and like you Parizeau's words were burned in my brain also. 030
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Yes, but when it comes to poetry readings and body-building, you're 100/100. 030
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I started it last night, and it's as horrifying as I expected so I'm hooked. I found it interesting that the 'aesthetic' of the OD houses in the series are all so similar and match the ones I saw in Canada in the 90s. 010
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 30/09/2026If I'd been a therapist in my 20s,which was the original plan, I'd have been utterly shitty at it. 131
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 28/09/2026That would need to be a whole series at least and not just 1 episode. 010
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 27/09/2026When I taught undergrad theology classes, I developed a rule: anyone self-describing as staunch/devout/regular church-going Christian almost always was the most biblically illiterate person in the room. 340

Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I was madly determined around 12, when most of my obsessions were reaching their peak of zeal, to have watermarked stationery as well as a wax seal for my envelopes. I got the latter but never the former. 020

Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 08/09/20262) As for psychoanalytic thought on terror management, I have not seen any explicit, detailed treatment of this topic at all. It is, however, hinted at in works on psychosis by, e.g., Bion, Winnicott, and others, especially. In the US the closest figure I know is Charles Strozier's work in, e.g., 110
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 08/09/2026Three thoughts. 1) I'd say Becker is worth reading both as witness to a particular cultural moment and also as a theorist, but in the latter capacity I have some issues from a psychoanalytic/clinical perspective. (E.g., his ideas on the aetiology of schizophrenia are fanciful nonsense.) 110
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 08/09/2026I'm very ambivalent about Becker. Let me think on this question and get back to you tomorrow. 000

Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Absolutely right. I once told a patient we would not continue psychotherapy until his apnea was addressed because poor/nonexistent sleep exaggerates or masquerades as anxiety, depression, and in severe cases even psychosis. Can't treat therapeutically what is physiological in origin. 010

Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I would once have said no--nobody can be that obtuse--but then I read *Remains of the Day* and the level of un-self-awareness in Stevens made me think that perhaps there are some people who truly don't know things about themselves that are externally observable, if not obvious, to others. 070
Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Nobody has clean hands, and this is not a new or America-only problem. Adam DeVille @adamdeville.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Christian hands--seen this notion become a convenient means by which one avoids coming to terms with the damage one has done to others by foregrounding the 'true self' and shunting all that damage to a pre-conversion 'false self' which has been 'totally' obliterated ("converted") by Christ. 010
