Thank you for the detailed explanation, and what a pain in the backside that all sounds. Having really enjoyed those videos, I hope you'll be able to make more in the future at some point, but understand if not. We live in a very strange world at the moment!

I still dream about the pastrami sandwich I had at Carnegie Deli the best part of 20 years ago, my goodness it was tasty. (Their cheesecake was incredible too.) I hope you enjoyed yours!

This seemed at the time a very odd way to introduce this topic, but to be fair, I do still remember it some 40-something years later, so I can't deny that it was effective.

Bizarre things that happened in your assembly: Our very serious headmaster spoke one day about how amazing technology around us was. He highlighted the flexibility of cassette tapes, holding one up, before unexpectedly destroying it with a hammer. Turns out he really wanted to talk about vandalism.

strong and will stay with me, and I'm sure many others, for as long as we're around. Even though your MTV and mine were a little different, your podcast still brought back many great memories, and I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. 💖 And up next: MTV News, followed by MTV Unplugged. 🎶📺🎵

Though I hadn't watched it for many years, I was genuinely sad when MTV switched off their UK music channels at the end of 2025, leaving just their main MTV "reality" channel, which I don't think I would watch if I was paid to do so. Clearly the magic left MTV a long time ago, but the nostalgia is >

@daveholmes.bsky.social Hey Dave, just wanted to drop you a quick message to let you know how much I enjoyed listening to Who Killed The Video Star: The Story of MTV. I was a huge MTV fan back in the 90s, though living in the UK I was tuning into MTV Europe, which was definitely a little different!

Interesting. I've been using my phone for contactless payments for years, as has nearly everyone I know, and I've never heard of any problems. From what I understand it's more secure to make payments via Google/Apple wallet than with a physical card: one-time tokens, harder to physically steal, etc.

I think the UK and many other countries are ahead here. The UK made it law for all new public chargers 8kW+ to accept contactless card payments in 2024, and for existing chargers 50kW+ too, so they're everywhere now. The EU has similar rules. Guess the USA won't catch up for at least 2 more years...

It seems that the US is a fair way behind the rest of the world as far as EVs go at the moment. If you don't have a contactless credit card, can you use your phone for contactless payments instead?

Adam Dawes @adamdawes.com · 21/09/2026
I think the "every charger needs a different app" days may already be over. I don't charge out in the wild too often, but I've used quite a few public chargers in the uk and every one worked with credit card rfid, no app required. Apps may get a slightly lower price, but they're no longer mandatory.

It's exceedingly impressive. But my main take away is that I still can't believe that the USA measures things in inches, it just seems so archaic. "Ah yes, that's 48 inches and seven 16ths" seems like total madness to me.

I struggled a lot with how time could have stitches, too. I also thought for a long time that a time bomb was a bomb that made people travel through time. They sounded particularly dangerous.

I live in one of the "extremely common" areas on that map. I don't remember seeing them at all until maybe last year, but there are flocks of them this year. Sometimes I go into the garden and maybe ten or twelve of them take flight. They're pretty but extremely noisy.

If I'm in the supermarket, my favourite apple is the Kissabel. It's sweet and full of flavour, with a red flesh that looks quite unique. For apples I can grow myself, the Cox's Orange Pippin apples on my tree in the garden are just delicious.

I have a lot of windfall apples from my trees - so many that I have filled several containers that I could hardly lift. Some are rotten through, some look pristine, most are somewhere in between. Are any of these safe to eat? For those that are not, any suggestions for things to do with them?

How do I get rid of the (presumably) codling moths that seem to fill the apples on my trees up with nasty creepy crawlies every year? It turns apple-eating into a horrible game of Russian roulette! 🐛

The first time I ever had apple cobbler was in Earls restaurant in Vancouver. It was so delicious that we went back the next day for more! I've not tried apple crisp, will have to give it a go. Apple crumble is probably the popular equivalent here in the UK.

The first definite game I remember playing was Nightmare Park on the Commodore PET, written by Bob Chappel, which was loaded from cassette tape. I don't honestly play it much these days, but it changed my life at the time. I did convert it to the C64 some years back: adamdawes.com/games/nightm...

The alert sound was so loud that I instinctively pressed OK just to get it to be quiet, and then the message disappeared, resulting in my failing to actually be able to read any of it. Doesn't exactly seem like the best system design...

@dmullinsgames.bsky.social I just finished playing Inscryption and just wanted to say "Bravo", what a wonderful game, which exceeded and twisted my expectations repeatedly. It joins a short list of games for which I wish I could erase my memory in order to experience them again from the start.

If you need to get to a specific code line number, don't use the Go To Line function, you can just scroll the mouse wheel through page after page after page after page (getting closer) after page after page after page (nearly there now) after page, after p- actually do use the Go To Line function.

I am so happy that the world seems to have generally agreed on a single version control system that everyone uses. And so fed up that that system is bloody Git.

Remember the internet before Google, before algorithmic feeds, before monolithic social media corralled us onto the same handful of apps? When small, *personal websites* and webrings linking them together reigned supreme? Time to bring it back.
