The Sixers were down nine players – including all of their centers – and used an ungodly number of substitutions in a blowout loss to the Celtics tonight. Story to come...

Sixers-Celtics update: Justin Edwards is playing center.

Have really liked what I have seen from VJ Edgecombe as a finisher in preseason so far. A lot of absorbing contact in air and going up strong through it. Finishing was one of his primary weaknesses last season (as was expected for a rookie guard of his size).

Sixers open tonight's preseason game with Dean Wade guarding Jayson Tatum and Justin Edwards guarding old friend Paul George. This is George's preseason debut for the Celtics; they are pretty much at full strength.

New: With his future uncertain, Jaylen Brown went to Morocco in June. The people he spent time with there turned out to be the two players he now sits in between in his new locker room. A hell of a coincidence gives Brown familiar faces with the Sixers: www.phillyvoice.com/sixers-news-...

LeBron James' playmaking, Joel Embiid's turnovers and more from Sixers' second preseason game

There was lots of good, and lots of bad in Brooklyn Thursday. A look at some highlights and a cause for concern.

New: “He already got the record. He don't care to score anymore.” Last night, LeBron James did not focus on scoring at all. Instead, he set out to stamp himself as the Sixers’ quarterback. All it took was a split second of eye contact with VJ Edgecombe: www.phillyvoice.com/sixers-news-...

LeBron James cements himself as the Sixers' quarterback in preseason debut

If their first preseason game with all five projected starters was any indication, LeBron James will be the one orchestrating the Sixers' offense in 2026-27.

LeBron James, Sixers' starters show massive upside, with a lot of work still to do

The Sixers' star-studded starting lineup made its preseason debut Thursday, displaying incredible highlights and reminders that they will need some time.

The Sixers' starters are done for the night. Philon Jr., Caldwell-Pope, Rupert, Edwards and Walker are the five with 4:50 left in the third quarter.

Joel Embiid's night appears over. He did an elaborate handshake with LeBron James – ending in a big hug – before sitting on the bench. Jabari Walker is in the game.

Here is how Nick Nurse staggered his five starters in the first half tonight. Started and finished the half with all of them on the floor; aside from one brief spurt with four (all minus LeBron James) he always had two or three of them on the court:

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Sixers lead 58-56 at halftime. Offense slowed down a bit after an awesome start, thanks largely to a whopping 13 turnovers. A lot to clean up, but the ball movement has been a lot better than I would have guessed at this stage. James: 10-5-4 Maxey: 14-2-2 Edgecombe: 7-5-1 Brown: 8-1-1 Embiid: 6-2-3

A preseason technical foul Joel Embiid! He was heated.

Philon immediately buries an open catch-and-shoot three, floating into empty space on a Tyrese Maxey drive to open up the easy kick-out.

1130

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Labaron Philon Jr.'s first minutes came early in the second quarter – checking in alongside Tyrese Maxey, which is interesting. Frontcourt: Wade-James-Walker.

070

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Sixers scored 33 points in the first quarter; the starting lineup scored 21 points in 7:25. LeBron James had five assists and four points, all on free throws. Joel Embiid shot 1-3 with three assists.

Sixers' end-of-quarter play: Dean Wade screening for LeBron James into a physical drive against Josh Minott.

050

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

The first LeBron short-roll chance – after screening for VJ – results in a 4-on-3 and a crisp pass to Dean Wade open in the corner. Next time down, James finds Jabari Walker wide open under the basket. Then an outlet pass to Walker, who draws a foul. LBJ has five assists already.

Sixers' first subs: Caldwell-Pope, Wade for Edgecombe, James.

First 5:23 of play for Sixers' starters: Maxey: 3-3 FG, 0 assists Edgecombe: 2-2 FG, 0 assists Brown: 1-1 FG, 1 assist James: 0-0 FG, 3 assists Embiid: 1-2 FG, 2 assists

1110

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Sixers once again push off of a made basket, and this time it results in a dunk in traffic for a flexing Tyrese Maxey. Then Maxey hits a three on a baseline out of bounds play. Asked Nick Nurse about the Sixers' intentionality behind pace pregame – will have more on that tonight.

060

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

LeBron James-Joel Embiid pick-and-roll results in Embiid dumping it off to Jaylen Brown in the dunker for an easy slam. Then James finds a cutting VJ Edgecombe with a no-look pass for a bucket.

1100

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

Sixers' first bucket of the game comes on a LeBron James hit-ahead pass to a streaking VJ Edgecombe beating the defense down the floor... off a made basket. Edgecombe and Maxey are going to get so many of those.

Adam Aaronson @adamaaronson.bsky.social · 08/10/2026

Sixers head coach Nick Nurse expects to play his entire projected starting five — Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, Joel Embiid — in tonight’s preseason game @ Brooklyn. Only players out, he thinks: Bona, Barlow, Simons, Hukporti, Fall

More Fernández on Gansey: “He should have had a job like this a long time ago in my opinion... I cheer for him, but today he’s the enemy, so not tonight.”

Nick Nurse was asked after practice yesterday if Ariel Hukporti's season-ending injury would make the Sixers reconsider their preseason usage. I thought his answer was quite interesting:
