AIR: AI in Research - A framework for transparent and responsible AI use mapped to the research process
The AIR (AI in Research) matrix is designed to help researchers and institutions describe, think through and explain how they use AI across the research process. It is not a checklist, a compliance tool or a judgement of good or bad practice. It is a way of making AI use explicit, transparent and defensible, stage by stage.AIR was created in response to the rapid uptake of AI in research and the growing uncertainty about how to explain its use clearly and responsibly.Researchers are increasingly using AI across many stages of the research process, often in legitimate and thoughtful ways. However, existing guidance tends to focus on assessment, tools or compliance. This has led to confusion about what counts as appropriate use, how much detail to disclose and how to describe AI involvement in ways that are meaningful to others.AIR was developed to address this gap by providing a shared, practical language for describing how AI is used in research, stage by stage. Its aim is not to prescribe behaviour, but to support clearer thinking, better conversations and more transparent reporting across disciplines and roles. The following documents are included:AIR - AI in Research_A framework for transparent and responsible AI use (PDF image)AIR - AI in Research_A framework for transparent and responsible AI use (accessible text only MS Word version)How to use AIR (PDF)
