I am a man. I’m a white, cis-presenting man, and if you saw me walking toward you in a parking lot, I know I probably look like exactly the demographic many women have learned to watch closely. People who know me know differently. They know I value being someone others feel safe around.
But strangers don’t know me. And they shouldn’t have to.
So this isn’t about how I would have behaved, what I would have done, or what kind of man I am. It’s about what men need to do.
Because I understand what women mean when they say:
“Not all men. But always men.”
That isn’t an accusation that every man is a predator. It’s the exhausting reality of having to calculate risk around men because you don’t know which man is dangerous until he proves it—and by then it may be too late.
We cannot keep building a world where our primary answer to violence against women is teaching women how to survive men.
Watch your drink. Carry pepper spray. Don’t walk alone. Text me when you get home. Don’t wear headphones. Check the back seat. Share your location. Learn self-defense. Don’t leave your friend behind. Cover your drink. Park under a light. Trust your instincts. Be polite, but not too polite. Say no clearly, but don’t make him angry.
We have spent generations giving women an ever-expanding survival checklist while treating the behavior that requires it like an unavoidable force of nature.
It isn’t.
Men are not weather. We have agency.
And men have a responsibility not just to refrain from sexual violence ourselves, but to stop tolerating the attitudes, jokes, conversations, coercion, humiliation, and behavior that allow it to flourish among us.
That means saying something when the room gets uncomfortable. Being the guy who ruins the joke. Calling out your friend. Believing someone when it would be socially easier not to. And when someone tells you about an actual assault, it means you fucking report it.
