@sandydoo.me appreciate all the work on ember-google-maps over the years. I’m interested in continuing to maintain the package (have a client that uses it heavily). Wondered if you would be up for transferring the repo/NPM package over so the Ember ecosystem can continue using it as-is? Thanks!

Legal requirement seems a fairly high bar (our whole enjoyment of podcasts is that anyone can set one up, no?). But agreed, I *always* default to transcript reading if possible. Some of this is that I don’t have a daily commute to fill, but I’m there for new ideas, not to listen to a convo 😉

What are your top priorities when choosing a framework to use for a new project. You're allowed to say "I use what I usually use". Just curious what plays into people's choices.

Yeah, many of the big changes in Saudi Arabia are driven by the near-term population bubble that is going to hit in the next 5-10 yrs. Good government works to stay ahead of its population’s needs, but it can lead to major impacts on a lot of things …

The ongoing ability to delete code that has been upstreamed to the platform is a huge benefit to SPAs, interesting to read Chris’ thoughts on Tom Dale’s comments from 7 years ago

Hmm, my read of developers.cloudflare.com/rules/compre... was that you could have Brotli all the time, you seeing something different? Main issue I’m seeing is it seems to target the “compress dynamic content” use case more than prebuilt static assets as it’s seemingly Level 4 compression

Cloudflare does support Brotli (they used to have a legacy flag that worked and recently sent o have moved that to a different system and regressed - ie if you had that flag on, it wasn’t enabled in the new system). Was cleaning that up last week on a site where Brotli *had* been on

I was looking at aws.amazon.com/textract/ for a client about 12-18 months ago, not sure if that’d be of use for some of your items? If formats change regularly it might not be worth it but if formats stay relatively stable it was useful

Yeah, construction uses what is widely available and cheap in a given location. In the US, wood is cheap and so 2x4 construction became quite prevalent. In Saudi, there’s lots of raw ingredients for concrete (sand anyone? 😉), so things shift that way. But concrete is a very poor signal conductor …

So yes, I fully agree with Ethernet is best, only wish I could. My office is less than 30 feet from our primary AP and I had to get an extra powerful device in order to have good enough signal with reliable latency. Turns out US construction methods really impact our undergird tech options/ opinions

I've got fiber backhaul (Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in fiber-to-the-premise, it's *awesome*) but in-house it's wireless all the way. Why? Two words: concrete construction. All houses / apartments are built with concrete and cable runs that make it easy to rewire are non-existent ...

If you rebuilt the GUI for Zed to be proper Mac and submitted a PR do you think they’d accept it? 😉 But yes, I hear you, pure Mac apps are a joy to use (Panic ones have been amazing over the last - checks calendar, gulps - 15+ yrs). But Mac-first UIs rarely go past the Mac. I want pairing w/ others

There was a blog post I read a few months back that talked about how speed was a key feature and they intended to keep it. And how with Rust they envisioned things like a performance budget for extensions so they could keep things fast. And I was thinking “yes, this, so much this …”

It is entirely possible that Bluesky becomes a self-congratulatory left-leaning bubble with a narrow censorious orthodoxy. That would be a pity. What I'm hoping for is a place with a healthier shared ethos, rather than merely a partisan mirror image to Elon's version of Twitter.

But seeing that, if prices get high enough, the market definitely responds/switches. It’s just amusing to me to be living in a land where natural gas is so available yet electricity is preferred for water heaters. Difference may be that piped natural gas isn’t a utility here

It was fascinating to see some of the tech choices that were tried for house heating (not just water heaters) but sobering to think about how much higher an expense I’d be signing up for to heat the entire house in winter using electricity

David Baker @acorncom.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
When I was buying a house 10+ yrs ago in the Denver area, I found an interesting “band” of houses that had been built in the mid ‘70s (during the midst of the oil crisis days where gas costs skyrocketed). Most of those houses came only with electric heat (and some didn’t even have a gas hookup)

the newer 220v wiring. The apartment I live in was 110v that was “converted” to 220v (but poorly by combining circuits) which means *replacing* an electric water heater in a spot wired for 110v is an exercise in procurement complexities. The entire supply chain no longer sells 110v heaters 😉

David Baker @acorncom.bsky.social · 14/11/2024
Do you think part of the reason for the disparity has to do with the perceived complexity of installing a new circuit for the water heater? Here in the heart of the Middle East “of course” water heaters are electric but what can snag folks is whether their place was built with 110v wiring or the
