Η διάκριση «καταρχήν/ας», αν υπήρξε ποτέ συστηματικά, είχε υποχωρήσει εδώ και δεκαετίες, και το ξέρουμε γιατί έγκυρα λεξικά, όπως το ΛΚΝ ήδη τη δεκαετία του 90, τα θεωρούν εναλλάξιμα. Και γιατί όχι; Γιατί να σημαίνει κάτι διαφορετικό το «επί της αρχής» και το «καταρχήν»;

Yes, that would be when you respond to a question with “well, that depends…”: you decline engaging with their central intention, and set up conditions to complicate and engage in terms that they are unprepared for.

Achilleas Kostoulas @achilleaskostoulas.com · 10/11/2025

If this idea of epistemic vigilance resonates with you, I’ve unpacked it further, with examples from teacher education and AI-assisted writing, on my blog. ⬇️

Epistemic Vigilance in Language Teaching: Critical Thinking with AI
Can interactions with AI cultivate epistemic vigilance (the ability to question, test, and refine knowledge) in language education?
054
Achilleas Kostoulas @achilleaskostoulas.com · 01/11/2025
One of the principles of our AI Lang project at the European Centre for Modern Languages is precisely this: the critical use of AI in language education. The goal isn’t to outsmart machines. It is to understand knowledge better by questioning them.
130
Achilleas Kostoulas @achilleaskostoulas.com · 01/11/2025
The most productive moments with AI aren’t when it’s right. They’re when it’s almost right. Those near-misses make us pause, think, and refine what we know.
140
Achilleas Kostoulas @achilleaskostoulas.com · 01/11/2025
Epistemic vigilance is more than critical thinking. It’s about how we decide what to trust. In language education, it’s becoming essential as teachers and learners use AI to generate content, analyse texts, or model writing. More optimisticly, it is also the starting point of deeper learning.
140
Achilleas Kostoulas @achilleaskostoulas.com · 01/11/2025
I am sure I am not the only one who has ever asked AI something and felt impressed —until I realised it can't be right! That pause (the "wait, what? moment) is the start of epistemic vigilance.
