In dollars that's: $15, $65 & $130 The overages are £0.10/GB and £1.50 per 1,000 emails. Or $0.13/GB and $1.95 per 1,000 emails. Keen to hear what people think of this now pricing model?

Pete Stewart @achene.app · 24/09/2026
We also give fair pricing for overages, so their not hard caps, and you don't get charged unfairly for going over. Here are the tier prices and caps: £10pm 100GB storage and 2,000 monthly emails £50pm 500GB storage and 10,000 monthly emails £100pm 1TB storage 20,000 monthly emails

I've been reworking the pricing for Achene now that we can offer unlimited bandwidth and only have to cap storage and emails. I've made the pricing linear, as I feel that's fairest, and I've kept a low cost tier for teachers who are just getting started and then two other tiers for growth.

I also use Caido for manual testing, and have created some tests for IDORs, etc, in the past, too. I always make a test if I come across an issue, but I don't always write security tests when developing... But I probably should!

Pete Stewart @achene.app · 23/08/2026
I use SemGrep, GitLeaks, pnpm audit and dependabot in my CI, and I use Caido for pen testing manual tests. Keen to hear others best practices!

If you're building in public, what tools are you using for security? Do you have any tools running in your CI for security checks? Are you using Burp or Caido for security/pen tests? Do you follow any other security procedures? #buildinpublic

If anyone is using Claude Design with good results, please explain how you are using it, as every time I use it, it just makes a load of rubbish that I ignore a chuck away! And it takes a long time and a lot of tokens to do that! #AI #design

I personally reach for Figma, but I also use Storybook in my code, so have everything in components that can be easily individually styled.

Pete Stewart @achene.app · 01/08/2026
I'm curious what others building in public do when it comes to design and UX? Do you: - Reach for a design tool such as Figma? - Design in code with the browser - Use a pattern library or Storybook - Get AI to do the leg work and the tweak it. - Outsource to a design. - Other #buildinpublic #SaaS

Fair points. I'm currently just considering the options, rather than aim to reinforce specifics. I guess you're right, though, a clean UX is potentially more important.

De-risking video transcription on Cloudflare: Containers, Workers AI, and a ~150x cost cut

I wrote an article showing some of the technical challenges we're tackling while building Achene. A technical solution that makes video transcription viable on Achene for every tier from £5 upwards, at no extra cost. Link below 👇 #BuildInPublic #SaaS

Every Achene course starts as a draft: title, description, cover image, price, all editable while nobody but you can see it. Publish only when it's actually ready, no half-finished course landing in front of students by accident. #buildinpublic #indiehackers #SaaS

Passwordless sign-in is live on Achene: passkey via FaceID, TouchID or a security key, or a one-click magic link to your inbox. No password to invent, forget, or reset, for you or your students. What's your preferred login method? #buildinpublic

Migrating students off another platform is the reason bulk import exists on Achene now. Upload a CSV of names and emails and each row creates an account plus an invite link automatically, no adding people one at a time. #SaaS #EdTech

Enrolment, a new contact, a tag getting added, any of those can now kick off an automated email sequence on Achene. Chain steps: send an email, wait, update contact data, without touching each one by hand. Custom events and user events are also available. #buildinpublic #SaaS #edtech

Miss typed a little bit of that, it was meant to say: I'm currently curious to know, for all building in public, are you using Gamification in product? What are your thoughts and feelings about Gamification? Are you aware of the Octalysis Framework by Yu-kai Chou?

Lessons on Achene can now be reordered by dragging them into place instead of managing them one at a time. Small change, but it's the kind of thing that makes building a course actually feel easy instead of fiddly. #buildinpublic #indiehackers #SaaS

Forum moderation for Achene: teachers can pin important topics, lock a discussion, edit or remove any post, and restore context when something gets removed so the thread still makes sense. Small platform, still needs real moderation tools. #buildinpublic #edtech

Students get emailed automatically when someone replies to a forum topic they're part of on Achene, no extra setup needed. They can mute a single topic or opt out of forum email entirely if it's too much. Small feature, cuts down on people missing replies. #buildinpublic

One place to see every student enrolled across every Achene course now: subscription status (active, past due, cancelled), enrolment dates, all in one screen. No more piecing that together course by course. #buildinpublic #SaaS #edtech

Ever lose your place in a course video and have to scrub around guessing where you left off? Achene's lesson player now remembers exactly where you stopped, plus playback speed from 0.75x to 2x, and marks a lesson complete once you hit 90% watched.

Achene's lesson editor supports headings, images, code blocks, links, bullet lists, and blockquotes, and everything autosaves as you type. Built so writing a lesson feels like writing anywhere else, not fighting a form. #buildinpublic #edtech #SaaS

Email campaigns are live on Achene: pick a segment of contacts, schedule the send, preview before it goes out, then see opens, clicks, and bounces afterward. Basic by design, built to actually get used rather than sit half configured. #buildinpublic

Upload a video straight into an Achene lesson now and you actually see it happening: upload progress, then processing status, in real time. No more wondering if it silently failed halfway through. Small feature, saved me refreshing the page five times testing it.

Three real categories of AI coding tools now: inline chat, agentic terminal agents, and IDE-integrated agents. I use the last two mainly. Curious if other solo devs converged on a similar split or went all in on one. #buildinpublic

It's tricky, as I'm posting regularly about what I'm building, but realistically that's just gaining other SaaS builders as follows... None of which are likely to actually want what I'm building. Any thoughts on how to gain the right audience?

I'm trying to build a community on socials while building in public, but now I'm wondering if I will actually get followers that will be likely to use the platform I'm building... Do other creators worry about this? Is there a solution? #buildinpublic #SaaS

The "solo" in solo founder isn't deciding everything alone, most of Achene's roadmap comes from what people ask for or push back on in the forum. The real solo part: nobody else triages the bug reports, nobody to stop you building at 2am Least glamorous part of building alone, for you? #indiehackers

I would say that adaptability is not always emphasised enough with current education and training, but problem solving is usually well covered. It also certainly should be more so, but I guess it's hard to evaluate and teach.

Pete Stewart @achene.app · 17/07/2026
Apologies if that's a poor translation! Here's the same response in English: I fully agree, and I would also put adaptability as one of the key skills. Technology is always shifting and changing, and therefore it's vital to be able to move quickly with it, and to not get stuck in the past.
100
Pete Stewart @achene.app · 17/07/2026
Estoy totalmente de acuerdo; además, consideraría la adaptabilidad como una de las habilidades clave. La tecnología está en constante evolución y cambio, por lo que es vital saber adaptarse rápidamente a ella y no quedarse anclado en el pasado.

Pete Stewart @achene.app · 17/07/2026
I personally feel problem solving is one of, if not the most important skill. However the ability to learn quickly and good communication skills are also very important! Anyone disagree? Or have another opinion?

Pete Stewart @achene.app · 17/07/2026
What do you think is the single most important skill as a software engineer? Is there one thing you feel all good engineers need, or do you feel it's a collection of specific skills that are needed to succeed? #buildinpublic #SaaS #WebDev

Are you mainly using Sonnet? Also, are you a software engineer? I wonder if engineers use less tokens to do more than others. Essentially it comes down to the complexity of the task, context and size. I generally make the complicated decision and mainly use it to implement small & localised tasks.
100
Pete Stewart @achene.app · 16/07/2026
Really good point though, context makes a big difference, and complexity of tasks. I'm almost purely using Sonnet 5. I actually find it does the cleanest work in most cases and stays well on task.

I haven't done a line count recently, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was getting close to that in my codebase... Are you including tests in that country?
