it is possible to categorize each and every fish in the ocean into one of three categories, but we do not know what that category is

i watched this movie, called "the fly" where some guy gets turned into a fly, but you cant "turn" someone into a fly, so the whole premise just seemed ridiculous to me

now, you might tell me that trying to learn old french using an old french -> french dictionary when i dont know any french is probably not a good idea.. and you are probably right

edit: which i don't exactly agree with*

abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
if something were to necessarily result in genocide, which i dont believe is the case in this situation, it would not mean that someone advocating for that situation is advocating for genocide

abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
even if you were to argue that it is not possible in practice, when i dont exactly agree with, someone saying that israel should not exist would not by that fact mean that they have genocidal intent
200
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
existing does not abstractly equate to genocide
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
do you mean that such a thing is by the fact inherently not possible or do you mean it is in practice not possible? i mean, you could say that there should be a single state where everyone in the area has equal voting rights, whether that is possible is one question but the idea of israel not

edit: not to say i cant imagine*
000
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
the situation would be to drastically change
000
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
this is not to say i can imagine isolated incidents of people being killed but im not going to not advocate for what i think would be necessary to stop israels currently existing actions on the possibility that something could happen under certain situations that are not guaranteed even if
200
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
fighting on behalf of israel i think there needs to be at the very least some third party military presence not beholden to the US or israel (if such a thing is possible) to keep israel from killing anyone, and i cant imagine that happening
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
"israel can be destroyed" is more ambiguous to me but in any case the primary concern i have is israel's current actions and situation, and i cant really foresee a future at this point that would be even israel ceasing their current actions, let alone something like the US government no longer
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
why?
110
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
to be clear i dont think "state of israel has no right to exist" is the same as genocidal intent
200
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
do you have any kind of sourcing on the default palestinian perspective being that israel should be genocided?
110
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
i mean there's other reasons i could understand but i mean conceivably it could be what would make the difference in what they do
000
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
it's conceivable to me that the only reason israel would not be outright trying to kill every single person as quickly as possible would be that it would cause countries to more quickly break ties or try to intervene, which i dont think would be reason to treat it any differently
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
if it would make any difference you would be welcome to message me instead, but as far as my understanding goes i would basically advocate for the same policies regardless of the specifics, so i dont understand the practical reasons for making a distinction in this context
200
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
edit : even if it would be the case of not being able to say "israel has committed mass extermination" *
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
"israel has not committed mass extermination", i dont think it would be ideal to treat it as fundamentally different in some way when they very much would still be able to, or when it could be considered as being under way
110
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
the same as described in the un genocide convention, even granting that it may be possible to make certain distinctions, i dont understand the practical purpose in doing so in terms of policy, and being lacking in knowing certain things, even if it would be the case of not being able to say
101
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
along the lines of what the other person said, the un genocide convention as i understand it is actually in certain ways a narrowing of the original definition (i'm not sure about all of the specifics), but even granting that the average person's conception of what genocide means is generally not

abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
it is in a sense functioning in practice as allowance of the oppression
000
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
hamas does, it is still ultimately a response to the situation as set up by israel, you can "technically" criticize only hamas in this context but it would be like criticizing particular members of any oppressed group in the context of oppression while not advocating any change to the oppression
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
theres also an argument that could be made that israel has de facto control of both the west bank and gaza, and that hamas is in a sense under their jurisdiction and is a reaction to oppression/killing of a minority group, and within that context while you can still criticize particular things that
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
to be perfectly fair if we are talking about hamas needing to disarm the idf/israel also needs to be disarmed but i cant imagine that ever being in the realm of possibility

to them being removed from being involved*

abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
attack any palestinians, and the situation is just so far from being that,
001
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
israel and us and other parties beholden to them from being involved in gaza and the west bank at all, the west bank settlements being removed, and some kind of third party military presence to take hamas's place , and for countries to agree to halt trade/funding of israel if they choose to
200
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
and again the governments of israel and US and many other western countries which are helping israel commit crimes have the policy "we have to get rid of hamas no matter what else israel does", the bare minimum to something like hamas disarming would necessitate
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
i understand that despite that, you can technically acknowledge things that hamas has done which are bad, though I personally don't feel that I am in a position to criticize them when I could do much more to try to alleviate the situation that palestinians are in
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
are in practice having the policy "hamas needs to be removed from power" be "commit genocide and ethnic cleansing"
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
the US and israeli gov are using hamas as a basis/argument on to which commit genocide and ethnic cleansing, If people want to engage with the situation you have to be able to recognize that in some way criticism of hamas is functioning as allowance of that policy, because people in power
100
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
my thinking, i think, is that if you want to criticize hamas it necessitates addressing the fact that israel is stealing land in gaza and the west bank and killing thousands of people/committing genocide and ethnic cleansing to achieve that, this whole time people in positions of power eg

if you are just altogether against jokes involving the holocaust and think they are antisemitic in some sense in the vein of it contributing to a negative impact on how people view the holocaust or antisemitism, i could understand that, but i dont read the jokes as otherwise antisemitic at all
110
abysssssssssssssssssssssb @abyssssb.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
do you mean the jokes as being antisemitic in some sense of the writer hating jewish people, or like a sense where jokes involving (about or using) the holocaust are altogether antisemitic in a sense even if the writer or the joke is otherwise not negative towards jewish people at all?

repas froid thing is also cool because you learn what comes before the part you're familiar with, and then you learn what comes after the part you're familiar with, which is a part that i just like a lot by itself, so that probably adds to the effect, it's sort of like a payoff/resolution, iirc...
