The fact that I need to explain it shows that many adults might need to think more carefully about the words they use.

The abbreviation was probably created by someone in the EU who thought they were being clever, but it also shows a lack of respect. Replacing it with “Children’s” was my way of drawing attention to this issue.

On top of that, “kids” is an informal and disrespectful way of referring to children. The word “kid” actually means a young goat. For many children, including me, it can be insulting. There are also educators, teachers, conservatives, traditionalists, and linguists who support this view.

This is despite the criticism across the EU that children aren’t the only ones who need greater protection and restrictions when it comes to social media. People of all ages need them.

For those who don’t know, KIDS is an abbreviation for “Keeping Internet Digital Spaces Accountable and Trustworthy.” It sounds great on paper—until you realize that every KIDS-related initiative in the EU targets only children.

I received a private message asking why I changed “KIDS” to “Children’s.” Let me explain:

To be clear, there is a very simple solution to the whole age verification problem. It is one that would work perfectly with the new EU law. But whether EU politicians will ever listen? Who knows... #EU #EuropeanUnion @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu @ec.europa.eu

I really wish EU politicians would talk with young people who actually understand the problems with age verification. I have a lot of experience with this myself. It took me nearly half a year to get a Facebook account because the age verification kept failing.

The plan will use the EU age verification tool. This has one major hole: it can still be bypassed quite easily. A parent can always create accounts for their children, and there is nothing stopping this from happening.

The new EU Children's Act is a step closer to good rules, where Australia and several other countries have failed. Blanket bans will not work. But there is still a major problem with this plan too. digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/...

The proposal will require online services to be safe by design and defines 15 as the age to create autonomous social media accounts.

The fact that I have to explain this as someone from Gen Alpha, born from the start of 2010 until the end of 2024, honestly makes me worried about what the future will be like for my generation and for Gen Beta. 😔

The solution is simple: do not shorten the dates in a way that creates ambiguity. Just say that Gen X ran from the start of 1965 to the start of 1980, and Millennials ran from the start of 1980 to the start of 1995. No overlaps, no missing years, and no confusion.
140
Others try to avoid this by writing “1965–1979” and “1980–1994.” But that creates a different kind of confusion, because people start treating the final year as though it means “until the start of that year,” rather than the end.
130
The issue is how people write these dates. Someone may write “1965–1980” and “1980–1995,” while meaning that the first generation ends at the start of 1980. But people misunderstand that and write the next range as “1981–1996.” That leaves everyone born in 1980 without a generation at all.
130
Gen X began in 1965 and ended at the start of 1980. Millennials, or Gen Y, then began at the start of 1980 and ended at the start of 1995. The same pattern continues: Gen Z began in 1995, and Gen Alpha began in 2010.

The attached image by Rich Farmbrough for Wikipedia is a clear example as it's completely wrong, and it is easy to see why. Every generation since Gen X has been 15 years long. ( @wikipedia.org )

One thing that has genuinely worried me lately is how often people struggle with basic reasoning, no matter their age or generation. You can see it in something as simple as generational birth-year charts.

I wonder how much more beautiful the world could be if we were allowed to be ourselves, without the limits adults place on our personalities. It is especially strange when adults themselves seem so broken. You only have to look at the wars, the poverty, and the pollution to see it. 🤐

But at the same time, they tell us to explore the world, learn, and grow beyond the generations before us. Somehow, they rarely seem to understand that these two things do not actually work together.

It is one of the most interesting things to me as a child looking at adults. In most ways, they want us to be just like them, especially when it comes to their values and rules.

So unless Balogun doesn't play, even if the USA would win, the win would count for absolutely nothing anymore. That's why everyone, including Americans, hate on the American national team. It's not just Trump who's a problem here, it's the American national team as well.
120
The hatred towards the team is due to there being a choice to ignore this decision and not let Balogun play regardless of what Trump did. However, current statements by Pochettino (head coach of the American national team) makes it likely that he will let Balogun play against the Belgians.

What we actually need is better legislation and for people to understand how those laws work. The fact that governments let social media companies break local laws shows a huge failure.

It is easy to point fingers, and I know I am doing that too. But facts are facts. If we actually listen to them, social media bans for young ones are just ageism and censorship hiding behind the word "protection."
132
If we actually look at the data, a social media ban makes more sense for anyone under 35. This is especially true when you look at mental health statistics, which show the biggest mental health problems are actually found in the 16 to 34 age group.
131
What makes this uncomfortable is that the people complaining most about young ones on the internet are (young) adults between 16 and 34. This is the exact same group that uses the internet the most, and they also watch the most mindless content.
132
For example, people often claim TikTok destroys the minds of young ones, but they only make up a small part of the users. A massive 40.3% of all users are actually adults between 25 and 34.
132
The social media platforms confirm this themselves. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn all report that their largest group of users is between 25 and 34 years old. This is true for total numbers, percentages, and time spent online.
131
By age 16, that number shoots up, reaching almost 100% in wealthy countries. This matches studies showing that nearly everyone between 18 and 49 uses the internet every day.
130
People make a lot of noise about banning those under 16 from social media. But did you know that less than one in three in this age group globally even have internet access? This is according to data from @unicef.org and the @itu.int
