'When you have an itch....' Herdwick sheep grazing in the Lake District, near Keswick, Cumbria.(Dec 2025). Herdwicks are a hardy, native breed to the Lake District fells and are well-adapted to the harsh, mountainous terrain. #lakedistrict #cumbria #nature #herdwick #sheep #photography #eastcoastkin
The image shows Herdwick sheep grazing on a fellside near Keswick in the Lake District, Cumbria, England.
The Herdwick sheep in the foreground is in a side profile and is scratching its white face with its left hind leg. Its head is bowed almost touching the ground.
Taken on a cloudy December day.
In the background are trees and sparse vegetation and autumnal colours.
95% of all Herdwick sheep are found in Cumbria, making them an iconic symbol of the area's landscape and cultural heritage.
Herdwicks are known for being the hardiest of all British hill sheep breeds, well-suited to the harsh conditions of the high fells.
Lambs are born black, and their fleece turns a distinctive grey with a white head as they mature.
The breed has a natural "hefting" instinct, meaning they tend to stay on their specific area of the fell without extensive fencing.
Beatrix Potter, the author and illustrator, was a keen Herdwick breeder and played a key role in preserving the breed.

Shepherds have braved glaciers in the Alps for millennia, crossing borders between Italy and Austria with a hundred sheep, facing wolves, avalanches, and storms to maintain a tradition recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This June, shepherds from South Tyrol once again led around 100 sheep up the slopes of the Alps, starting from Italian valleys at about 800 meters altitude, where the animals have been grazing since April 25th, to the Alpine passes already inside Austria, on a route that exceeds 2.800 meters and crosses sections of glacier.
