Writer of Austen-inspired and gaslamp fantasy romantic novels, servant to Pfeffernusse the Queen of Cats, retired doc, and lousy housekeeper. Probably drinking tea and making good trouble. she/her linktr.ee/abigailreynoldswrites

Writing a scene where a fae enters my character's dreams, and I'm drinking Faerie Queen tea from @fridaytea.com on a day when the boundaries between Faerie and mortal is supposed to be weakest. Am I asking for trouble? #JAFF

Celebrating Jane Austen's birthday by giving away free #Austenesque books- and by indulging myself in my annual re-read of Pride & Prejudice. I learn something new every time!
It's Jane Austen's 250th birthday and you get the presents! Free books: Mr. Darcy's Journey, The Darcys of Derbyshire, Conceit & Concealment, and The Darcy Brothers.

What an amazing opening. I read it, stared at it, studied it, read it again. And then I gobbled down the rest The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door by H.G. Perry. What a treat! Definitely among the best of the year, probably an all-time personal favorite. Wonderful academic historical fantasy.
First page of book with text: In the end, it was four words that changed the course of our lives and the history of the world. Perhaps it wasn't really so surprising. They were, after all, the most important words in any language.
"What are you reading?"

Now today's #WIPSnips word is right up my gaslamp alley! From the upcoming third book of my Fitzwilliam Darcy, Mage trilogy, fantasy with a Jane Austen flavor. #amwriting #JAFF #writingcommunity
Darcy took a cautious step forward. “Welcome, Mother. You fainted by the gatehouse, and they brought you here.”

Lady Anne visibly collected herself. “I am sorry to have caused such trouble.” She sat up and carefully swung her legs off the settee. Of course she would hate to look like an invalid.

“As long as you are well, I am happy,” he said mechanically. Turning to Quickthorn, he asked, “What now?”

“I will try asking her the same question that caused her to swoon,” the dragon said. “You have bindings in your mind. Who did this to you?”

Lady Anne paled, but she raised her chin, her face contorted in an odd grimace. In a low, bitter voice, one that would have cut ice, she said, “My sister Catherine, of course.”

Today's #WIPSnips word is 'worth.' Here's a snippet from my upcoming Austenesque gaslamp fantasy, The Guardians of Pemberley. Hope it's, um, worthy! #JAFF #amwriting #writingcommunity #writingprompts
“Have you anything to trade for food?” the fae asked.

Of course she did not; Elizabeth had nothing but the clothes she wore. Perhaps that was worth something, though. Georgiana claimed the lesser fae were fascinated by the seashell collection in the library.

She touched the nacreous button on her chest. “I have a button made from the shell of strange creature from the South Seas, but that is worth more than mere food. It shimmers with all colors of the rainbow when the light falls upon it.”

Was she actually daring to bargain with a fae?

I've fallen behind on #WIPSnips lately, but here's one from book 3 of my Austenesque gaslamp fantasy, The Guardians of Pemberley. #amwriting #Novelember #writesky #JAFF
Elizabeth’s eyes widened. “Granny helped you?”

“Yes, though not without some disagreement,” Darcy said.

“Did she disapprove of you coming here?”

He paused. What had the old lady been angry about? He probed at that odd empty spot in his memory until he found something. “She wanted me to wait longer before I came after you.” That had been impossible, of course. He reached out a finger to trace the line of Elizabeth’s cheekbone, as if he could make the dark circles under her eyes disappear and bring the sparkle back to them. Once again she was suffering because of him.

As the crackling twigs and crunching leaves of the lynx’s passage faded, Elizabeth stripped off her gloves and touched her husband’s face, the only exposed skin on his body. “William, are you there?”
There was a sudden tug on her Talent, like that of young plants seeking nourishment, but this was stronger, a deep thirst for her magic, like an empty well. Concerned, she let her Talent flow into Darcy. It was a strange intimacy, like being inside his mind, so different from their usual interaction. But this time she felt only the land.

#WIPSnips from my gaslamp WIP Spellbound at Pemberley - "ice" #WIPWednesday #Romancelandia #amwriting
By evening, Elizabeth’s fever was raging, and Darcy cursed himself for not trying harder to convince her of the dangers of blood magic. If only he had not been too proud to tell her about his own disastrous experience with it! Now all he could do was to worry as she shivered and demanded more blankets. Her maid kept quietly replacing the cool cloths on her forehead and sponging her down, while other servants fetched a constant stream of ice chips from the icehouse.

#wipsnips from Spellbound at Pemberley "Shallow" #romancelandia #amwriting #gaslampfantasy #austenesque
Elizabeth threw herself down, heedless of the stains that could ruin her dress, and dug her fingertips into the dirt.

The land’s power thrummed through her, from the deep, solid roots of the trees around her and the shallow carpet of grass, from the richness of the soil and the potential for life contained in it. She felt a squirrel skittering up an oak branch and the mice nesting in the bushes nearby, preparing their home for the coming winter.

All was as it should be in the earth. It was only inside Elizabeth that everything was wrong.
