Forgotten Forests: 10 A research focus has been identified! 🔍 After diving deep into all that we know about hedges, we have decided to study root systems inside Cornish hedges, how they are distributed, and how they contribute to global carbon sequestration 🌳 but why roots? 🧐 Stay tuned!
A Cornish hedge with a giant sycamore tree growing from its top. The trunk of the tree has grown wider than the hedge itself and the roots are pushing through the stoney bank. An animated circle shows a root structure, visualising how scans from our work will reveal root systems inside the hedges.

Forgotten Forests: 08 (1/2) Last December, I got a chance to watch this beautiful film about Kerdroya - a labyrinth that celebrates the 4,000 year history of Cornish hedges. Kerdroya is built as a blend of varied Cornish hedge styles that you will find across Cornwall! youtu.be/yi0jAP0ufMg?...

Forgotten Forests: 07 (1/2) Hedges are home to wildflowers, woodland trees, lichen, mosses, mushrooms, insects, birds, mammals, and much more! They foster a complex little ecosystem along the borders of land that is otherwise heavily managed for farming and construction.

Forgotten Forests: 06 (1/2) Had the opportunity to explore the "Flora: 150 Years of Environmental Change" exhibition curated by Kurt Jackson at @penleehousegallery.bsky.social! It was brilliant seeing plant life of the Cornish landscape freeze-framed through the centuries!

Forgotten Forests: 04 Never did I think the words "Bake your PhD" would fall upon my ears 😂🎂The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DEES) Bake Off was a brilliant and delicious way to learn about the work of my colleagues! And yes, here's a Cornish hedge cake!
A chocolate cake cut into the shape of a Cornish hedge with trees, layered with chocolate spread, and green fondant as the grass and tops of trees. Tree trunks were made with chocolate sticks and stone banks of the hedge were white chocolate buttons. Crushed Oreos were the right texture for soil! I presented a little intro. piece about my research at the bake off event

Forgotten Forests: 03 (1/3) I had the absolute pleasure to learn the 4000 year old practice of Cornish hedge building with the Cornwall Rural Education and Skills Trust CIO (CREST)! Rows of stone packed in with soil, these structures can last for hundreds of years...

Forgotten Forests: 02 (1/3) What are these "woody features" that I'll be studying? Well, think of rows of trees, hedges, stone banks with plants growing on them (more on the Cornish hedge soon!). But why call them "Forgotten Forests"? (See part 2)
An Ash tree over 100 years old is a hub for wildlife. Its giant hollows are perfect homes for bats, woodpeckers, MANY insects.
