She had once loved coming to this house. Not simply because she enjoyed playing in it, or taking in the orchard and the gardens and the woods, but because Ben was here. Because Ben had been her best friend and the only person she demanded to see, until he wasn’t. Until his eyes grew cold and his touch disappeared and he no longer smiled or hugged her or teased her. Until something broke inside of him, leaving sharp-edged pieces scattered in his soul, none of which seemed to fit back together right.

“Don’t even think about it. He’s a textbook player who gets off on broken hearts.”

Those were the exact words Rey’s friends had said to her when she’d first met Kylo a few months ago. They’d been stuck in her head ever since, mostly because he’d been, too.

Because, before she’d heard that first warning, her initial thoughts had been that he was attractive and she wanted to talk to him.

Pretty glaring discrepancy there. So, she took their words to heart, because she trusted her friends, and she stayed the fuck away from Kylo Ren.

And yet, she still found him everywhere. At the grocery store, the library, sports events. Living in the same suburb as he did was actually quite the problem, as it turned out. Mostly because every time she saw him, she wanted to wave or say hi. She didn’t even think he knew her name and part of her itched to introduce herself, but that was a silly impulse.

“Don’t even think about it.”

She went out with Rose, Kaydel, and a few others to the club and absolutely did not think about it. She did shots, laughed, and danced and for a while, she forgot all about the guy she wasn’t supposed to know.

Until a stranger followed her to the bar and tried to talk to her, and not for the sake of a good conversation, either. Rey was instantly uncomfortable by the man’s proximity and the way he reeked of cologne that just smelled like it came from a bottle shaped like a naked woman. She was about to make serious eye contact with one of the bartenders when a warm arm banded around her waist from behind and a deep voice spoke from beside her.

“Hey, babe. Sorry; the line to that bathroom is fucking insane.”

Rey went stiff. She slowly looked up and when she did, her heart fell to her feet then ricocheted into her throat. Kylo stood there, all dark and territorial, looking at her with eyes that, to Rey, clearly said trust me.

His head snapped up and his eyes narrowed on the man who’d been nattering in Rey’s ear. He’d shifted off to the side a little, looking for all the world like he’d just been innocently standing there.

“Who the fuck are you?” Kylo barked.

The man blinked at Kylo but didn’t reply.

“Did you touch my girl?” Kylo demanded.

His girl. Oh, shit. Shit, shit, shit. If her friends found her right now, she’d never hear the end of it. And if they discovered what the words “my girl” had just done to her body, they’d probably pass out.

“What?”

Kylo took one threatening step towards him. “No one touches what’s mine unless they have a death wish. Do you have a fucking death wish, asshole?”

“N-no, dude! I never touched her!”

“Good. Then get the fuck out of here.”

When the man was out of sight, Kylo turned back to face her. Gone was the murderous rage that had been simmering in him just moments before. His shoulders were relaxed and he gave her an almost sheepish smile.

“Sorry. You looked like you hated whatever he was doing. Figured I’d help.”

Rey swallowed through a tight throat. “Right. Thank you. That was—you didn’t have to do that. Shouldn’t have. I mean, you don’t know me, so—”

“It’s Rey, right? And so what if I didn’t?”

She was stunned. “You know my name…? How?”

“Friend of a friend,” he said with a shrug.“Not important. Are you okay?”

“But you’re nice,” Rey muttered distractedly. “They said you were a player, but you’re nice…”

Kylo laughed, shocking her out of her mental intermission.

“Not a player,” he said. “Also not nice…towards most people.”

“…But not me?”

“But not you.”

Ben is sitting on the bed, eyes pointed toward the ceiling, the rattling vent. Rey's breakfast plate rests on the table, mostly untouched, one or two bites of egg and tomato missing. As she left it.
"You need to eat," she says.
"Not hungry."
"If you don't eat, the medication will upset your stomach."
His mouth twists. "What does it matter?"
So he wants to be difficult. Fine. Rey grabs her clothes and walks back to the bathroom, hand on the door frame. "Your shower is a biohazard."
His eyes slide to hers. "I didn't ask you to stay and use it."
"Well, I did. What are you going to do about it?"

Again, Ben chuckled. She was full of jests tonight.

“Correction: you are my wife, not a guest. And for tonight, this”—he patted the mattress as he laid down on it—“is our marriage bed. We are somewhat obligated to share it, unfortunately.”

He could practically hear her teeth cracking from how hard she ground them together. He did nothing to hide his cocky smile.

“I do not wish to lay with you,” she admitted quietly, darkly. “I do not wish for you to touch me, I—”

“I assure you, you have nothing to fear from me. I would rather touch a caged lion. Then again, what is the difference, I wonder?”

“Rey!” Rose is at home, and the sight of the familiar surroundings—concert posters on the walls, squashy corduroy sofa, counters chipped by academic generations of grad students—sends a pang of longing through Rey. “How’s your weekend going?”
“Okay,” she says automatically, then corrects herself. “Good, actually.”
Rose’s smile is even more achingly familiar than the apartment behind her. “I’m glad. Is he still being polite?”
“Yeah.” He even made conversation for a combined total of ten minutes yesterday. “I’m settling in, sort of.”
She gives Rose a quick tour of her room, letting her friend ooh and aah over the elegant four-poster bed and antique clawfoot tub. When she resettles on the loveseat and flips the camera back around, Rose’s smile takes on a mischievous edge. “So … how’s the sex?”

Are any of my mutuals incredibly slow writers and thoughtful readers? For my lit degree, I had to read over 25 novels a semester—which stressed me out. I did, aced my classes, but it took a huge toll. It’s one of the reasons, other than the cost, as to why I didn’t pursue a PhD in Literature.

Her heart lurches. “Are we back to that?”
His face twists, lips trembling. He shakes his head.
“Then let me help you.”
With an exhale, he releases her hand, letting his leg go slack so she can free his jeans. But the shirt—she has to cut that off with medical shears because he still can’t lift his arms. The light hits his skin. His bruises blare, snaking across his chest, arms, and back—green-yellow, fading purples and brown centers. And the raised flesh, the scars—they coat every area. Some white, some red. Keloids. Hypertrophic. Contracture. Scars she couldn’t name in the dark a week ago.
No, no. She shouldn’t stare. Focus, focus. He needs to be clean.
