Zohran has proven that social democracy gains wide appeal when it shows that it can not only redress harms but also practically maintain a functioning society. Communists need to take this as an opportunity to put forward specific proposals, too, @abenanav.bsky.social's recent work does just that.

Choice under Value Pluralism
Classical rational choice theory assumes preferences are complete, presupposing that an agent's evaluative considerations have a common scale. We drop completen

This paper is my first foray into normative axiomatic choice theory. It's really fun to do something completely different, intellectually. I've learned a lot but I still have much more to go! I couldn't have done this without my colleague Ryan.

We also develop our own, Heritage impossibility theorem, which says that when values really conflict, there is no context-independent rule for deciding what to do. The alternatives on the table really matter. That will be relevant to the social choice theory we are writing now.
171
Aaron Benanav @abenanav.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
The formal basis of the paper is an inversion of Arrow's social choice theory. He works with individual values and social choice. We invert this as social values and individual choice. We use this "Arrow dual" to have done with both methodological individualism and collectivism.
142
Aaron Benanav @abenanav.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
We measure rational choice theory against some of the hardest choices drawn from literature, including Huckleberry Finn, Hamlet, Antigone, and the Bhagavad Gita.
151
Aaron Benanav @abenanav.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate that value conflict can be rational. In other words, it is sometimes rational to not know what to do when facing a hard choice—because one's values pull one in different directions.

Local knowledge/innovation from below and planned research/ innovation from above are crucial to capitalist economies and to any post-capitalist future (and to my pieces). I’m not sure what GenAI introduces that’s new. I don’t think it’s the key tech revolution in our times—the energy transition is.
