in 2025 it's now #Dembele with excellent dynamism leading the press/cutting the pitch in half and denying options, whilst the rest of PSG (FBs higher especially Hakimi) are more often playing m2m. Will be interesting to see how often these two systems are deployed (or merged in a hybrid approach)

In the 1st leg, flex occupation of spaces btw the lines by PSG forced #Emery into difficult choices: the 6s were often pulled wide/needed to follow the frequent deep runs, while CBs needed to follow into midfield, leaving #Vitinha free to operate. you can see LIV's conundrum when #Szoboszlai steps out to Haraldsson, it leaves Mukau the DM free to progress. Liverpool eventually had to have VVD follow Haraldsson very high up the pitch, who would also show up on the other side, often overloading the same side w Cabella.

one /common pattern they used was to pin Tsimikas w Bakker in a high RW position, w the CMs tilting to the right (taking w them #Szoboszlai+Macca), Mandi's deep position manipulating Lucho Diaz. In the final game for Nuri #Sahin, Bologna managed to dominate BVB. While often #Italiano is rightfully praised for his suffocating m2m (see Inter), I thought his in poss. has evolved (see Fiorentina) nicely. Think BOL will continue to cause problems for opponents... #ttx #BVB #UCL

What makes this Bayern performance (74%, 12 shots, 2.1 xG vs 26% and 0.12 on RBL's lone shot) remarkable is how the recent form vs high quality opponents (injuries) has not been that great, but they're also the team (besides LIV) that is able to control games with and w/o ball completely

You can sometimes see the FBs making these dynamic halfspace runs w/o the ball, the purpose (since Zinchenko to Martinelli) is to open the pass to the wing, where Sane and Olise have freedom and advantage vs an offensive winger turned WB in Nusa and Henrichs to cut inside and make 1-2s (Sane) w Kane

First baiting, then bypassing the front 2 is usually w Goretzka or Kimmich dropping back and after quick and precise circulation the FBs Davies or Laimer can receive beyond in positions to drive at the defense. We can see with his goal how this worked for #Laimer

but overshifting or jumping on the arriving FB creates free central areas (zone 14) for the likes of Kimmich for the 3rd goal

Story of #FCBRBL is (a mad start) FCB's complete control vs a 532 that is built upon their relentless m2m oop, a tightly connected, flexibly occupied positional 3-1-3-3 that dominates and counterpresses to completely pin Leipzig in. They present RBL with a series of losing propositions: ttx

FCB always build 3v2 in 1st line with usually 1 pivot (flexible) that could be joined by a deep receiver (once you moved the middle 3) in the 2nd line, who can turn and drive at backline
Meanwhile Bayern use 3 (usually Kane + 2 wingers but width can be given by FBs) to pin 5 in last line, with runners in halfspaces (FBs) or 10 space (Musiala or rarely a winger from far side in)

two other issues this man-marking creates is that 1. RBL strikers now have to track/press back w dismarking CBs who get involved such as Pau Torres 2. if applied inconsistently (esp. in counterpressing), Villa can transition via Tielemans' playmaking and Watkins/Rogers coming deep
