good piece by @abelmeszaros.bsky.social on Igor Tudor's tactical approach the results of this style of play, as he says, have been mixed but they definitely add up to a recognizable tactical vision analyticsfc.co.uk/blog/2023/03...

I’d like to thank everyone at RTL 🇭🇺 for the opportunities during the last 18 months of #UCL coverage. Wish them all the best going forward but for now we’ll go our separate ways. Abel

in October, PSG were still pressing in 4141 w +1 atb, and led by Lee, their OOP was well-exploited by Arsenal via FB inversion, 8s dropping wide, overloading Vitinha as the single pivot #ttx

In the opening 30' of the CDR final, Barcelona exploited Ancelotti's 4141/4231 (Tchou man-marking Olmo so even 541 gave up central combos) with - left side 3v2 (Rodrygo') -Pedri manipulating Valverde w his movement -Inigo line breaking to Raphinha inside reception/lay off to -Gerard Martin free runs

⚽🥅🏃 Bit of fun with taking penalties (in context of the J. Alvarez debate): went up vs a Freestyler and then Patrik Demjén (MTK, Hungary NT) in a shootout. Let's find out how it went: www.youtube.com/watch?si=dhp...

In the 1st leg, flex occupation of spaces btw the lines by PSG forced #Emery into difficult choices: the 6s were often pulled wide/needed to follow the frequent deep runs, while CBs needed to follow into midfield, leaving #Vitinha free to operate. Eventually PSG tried more dribbling + chips to runs

What a performance by the forgotten BVB defenders -Niklas Süle won 3/3 duels vs BdO candidate Raphinha (3/14 on duels, FIRST Barca game this season w/o a shot creating action) -Ramy #Bensebaini + Daniel Svensson (11/18 duels) held #Yamal to 2/9 dribbles (6/6 1st leg) and without a key pass + 1 shot

This #PSG @astonvillaofficial.bsky.social is special for many people (from Emery to Asensio), but it's a once in a lifetime affair for the great @jonlegossip.bsky.social. He was kind enough to go through the tie from a personal + professional POV, answering a few Qs below: #ttx

After a recent drop-off in intensity vs the ball, it's been nice to see #Inzaghi's #Inter display some very impressive pressing displays vs Atalanta and Udinese - something @fcbayernmunich.bsky.social should be also concerned about. streamable.com/45exv0

I wrote a very in depth #MCI analysis back in late November/early Dec: telex.hu/sport/2024/1... Despite substantial efforts tactically and via transfers, there's an argument to make that #Guardiola and the team's been going in circles....

Every time I watch/analyze #Lille in UCL (RM, ATM, Juve) I'm highly impressed by #Genesio's match plans and execution -the medium high block that LIV struggled to play through (goals from deflection and random transition) -patient and flex buildup to find free man #ttx #Liverpool

In the final game for Nuri #Sahin, Bologna managed to dominate BVB. While often #Italiano is rightfully praised for his suffocating m2m (see Inter), I thought his in poss. has evolved (see Fiorentina) nicely. Think BOL will continue to cause problems for opponents... #ttx #BVB #UCL

hot take: think Bayern are the best/most dominant team itw at the moment - the ease with which they create chances (despite missing Musiala, etc) and the sheer power of their OOP risk just allows absolutely nothing.... #ttx

Story of #FCBRBL is (a mad start) FCB's complete control vs a 532 that is built upon their relentless m2m oop, a tightly connected, flexibly occupied positional 3-1-3-3 that dominates and counterpresses to completely pin Leipzig in. They present RBL with a series of losing propositions: ttx

FCB always build 3v2 in 1st line with usually 1 pivot (flexible) that could be joined by a deep receiver (once you moved the middle 3) in the 2nd line, who can turn and drive at backline
Meanwhile Bayern use 3 (usually Kane + 2 wingers but width can be given by FBs) to pin 5 in last line, with runners in halfspaces (FBs) or 10 space (Musiala or rarely a winger from far side in)

Bit of an under the radar #UCL match, but great tactical battle btw #Emery's variable (at times de Zerbian) buildup vs what's been a disappointing RBL press for a while now. Here are a few scenes: ttx

One of the things that's always really impressive about #Slot's LFC is the instant in-game adjustments - in this case it's the manipulation of the wingers (does he follow to CB and leave the FB?) via inverting both FBs ttx

Abel Meszaros @abelmeszaros.bsky.social · 07/12/2024

despite the hilarious (dare I say ARod-esque) handball punch, #Mbappe continues to work hard and it's nice to see him overload/roam across and he seems to be connecting more with teammates/playing within the game

lil live ttx thread on #GIRRMA where the hosts are high pressing especially on the left side - even doubling up Lucas Vazquez - with successful regains and a chance created by Miguel + Bryan Gil for Miovski in addition, they're unsurprisingly playing calmly out vs RM and getting transition opps

Thought Newcastle's out of possession approach was brilliant vs @lfcr.bsky.social, so here are few things they executed with some of the intentions (at least my interpretations of them) behind #Liverpool

In the past I've been critical about #Arsenal's IP approach, but in many ways Sporting were a great matchup for them. I thought they had so many solutions, let's take a look at a few: 1. against a mid block 532/541 they pinned the back 5 with Saka and Havertz's key movements occupied the LCB

140

Abel Meszaros @abelmeszaros.bsky.social · 27/11/2024

This was vintage #B04: -very coordinated, dedicated collective effort in pressing (see right after the 1st goal from kickoff) vs an overwhelmed/RBS side -the usual 3rd man runs (Palacios as extra mid like vs @lfcr.bsky.social,), quick efficient progression via Wirtz drops, wide triangles

-RBS 4141 had the issue of the back 4 being pinned wide by B04's setup, but as they wanted to/got bainted into pressing by B04's deep buildup they always encountered their single DM being split by Wirtz/Palacios, whilst their pressing 5 could never get there in time. As a result B04 could progress very easily

I spent a couple days looking at @GironaFC -arguably my favorite thing about creating content is the discovery/research - aka the best buildup you have never heard of. Thanks to NT chief analyst Alberto #Bosch on his insights, Albert Blaya Sensat as well: telex.hu/sport/2023/1...
