Yelling into the void from the city that Jenny Lind dubbed "the most beautiful village in the world" and "the paradise of America". Georgist. #carsruincities

There's a reason why Somerville hasn't had a traffic death in 4 years. The city isn't perfect, but they've made a concerted effort to design many streets around people and not cars. You can still drive, but you're going to have to do so slowly and while paying attention.

Somerville is intentionally making roads harder to drive on. It’s getting results. - The Boston Globe
To make roads safer, the city says, sometimes you have to put some obstacles in drivers' way.

Halloween is coming. You don’t have to go to a “trunk-or-treat” event in Seattle! You can close your neighborhood street to through-traffic – for free! Trick-or-Streets permits are free and easy to get. Join here: seattle.gov/transportation/trick-or-streets
The ancient two-panel Drake meme. On the top, he's looking away in disgust and holding his hand up. The text next to it says "Truck-or-treat". On the bottom, he looks pleased and is pointing toward text that says "Close your street".

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Back in 2005, a group of restorers established a hidden workshop in Paris’s Panthéon and snuck into the building for a whole year to repair an antique clock. “The group managed to connect the hideaway to the electricity grid and install a computer…” Wild! [theguardian.com]

Outside of recessions, monthly job losses are rare, about 1 in 11 months historically. We've now had 6 in the last 2 years. July just flipped negative (again) in today's revisions. Had to keep Pandemic out of the timeline so it didn't completely ruin the scale

Today is the last day of semi-sober September and low-caf September! It's been more of a mostly sober September with a Labor Day party and a few shared Guinness. Only decaf and teas. A good reset, highly recommended.

Disappointing that the big push from Massachusetts housing activists is Question 7: small-lot single-family homes wherever there happens to be water and sewer, not where housing makes the most sense and towns can serve it efficiently. A sewer map isn't a plan.. #mapoli

AB @ab-cabra.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
1/ Question 7 gets the diagnosis right: MA needs more housing and local zoning is part of the problem. But it only applies where lots have public water and sewer, and that test aims the reform at the wrong places. 🧵

Much of America's home wealth wasn't earned by improving anything. It came from making sure no one could build next door. Your house didn't get more valuable because you made it better. It got more valuable because we made new housing illegal.

AB @ab-cabra.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Folks, cheap single-family housing was an anomaly: new highways opened cheap land, federal mortgages made buying easy, and houses were small. Close-in land is now built out. That model isn't coming back. Affordable homes will come from building smaller and denser, where zoning allows it.

Something I recently learned that is soooooo smart: the burgundy hue on Dutch bike paths isn't for looks - it's for safety. Iron oxide pigment (same stuff in bricks) gets mixed right into the asphalt, so one glance tells everyone: bikes belong here.

Noticed a lot of mandatory-helmet advocates aren't cyclists. Head injuries can look like random bad luck from the outside, but a lot of it comes down to road conditions and driver behavior. Maybe as much focus on driver accountability as on helmet laws?
