One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

In the end, I don't do it, because it is not worth it, and might make me a target to some sort of harassment. But it is deeply infuriating and raises a constant anger in me that everything is filled with scammers these days. They are truly a cancer on all human activity.

Every now and then, I feel the urge to email back to the scammers and call them the low repugnant sacks of excrement that they are, and tell them all the ugly things they deserve. Vlad Dracula comes to mind.

Ever since my name got listed on my university's website, I get constant emails about fake conferences and spam telling me to submit to journals completely unrelated to my field. Are we meant to just accept that half of emails in academia are scammers lying to your face? That is quite depressing.

Something I think is fun to calculate: How much energy (or rather power) in total is absorbed by Earth from all the neutrinos from the Sun? From what I remember, the number is something ridiculously small. Neutrino energy is few % of the Sun's output, but very little of it gets absorbed by Earth.

Selling bananas or any fruit by item instead of by weight seems very strange to me.

Of course, it can be understood as well-meaning satire and parody that doesn't actually think all those anti-intellectual things, but the American public isn't exactly well-known for understanding satire and parody.

Frasier became completely uninteresting to me when I found out that Kelsey Grammer is a huge Trump supporter. When you think about it, it isn't that surprising: Frasier leans at times heavily onto anti-intellectual "lol academics are incompetent, we need REAL men to do stuff" narratives.

It's hilarious that Huang things not knowing his address, zip-code and phone number are a mark of how he is cognitively off-loading to technology and Klein doesn't seem to press him that what he's actually obviously doing is using the fact that he's rich to off-load onto other humans.

Rome became "Commodus' colony" and he gave himself 12 names so he could name the months after them. Senate was "Commodian Fortunate Senate". He put up a lot of statues of himself, depicting himself as Hercules. He ended up assassinated a couple years later and all his renamings were reversed.

Fun Roman history: Near the end of his reign, with Commodus' narcissism and delusions fully unshackled, he started renaming everything after himself. He named the months, various institutions like the senate, even the city of Rome itself. Romans sure were weird, imagine someone doing that today.

Not sure of the context, but: Moomins, especially the 1990 tv series, were a major part of childhood in Nordic countries and especially Finland. Wholesome stories, beautiful animation, amazing music etc. Lovely Moomin books. (And comics which are more rough in their humour.) And mugs, merch etc.

Recent example of LLM use: I have many text files. I wanted to replace word in them with another word. I could have gone through each file one by one, find+replace the word. That would be a tedious effort taking 30> minutes. Asked a local LLM for a simple Python script to do it. Done in <5 minutes.

Or it cites some random redditor from 5 years ago who had very strong opinions but zero actual evidence to back them up. Always check what it actually cites. But often even such redditors at least suggest solutions that I can search more information about, often leading to the actual right solution.

Aarros @aarros.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
If I ask LLM information about some topic and ask it to cite sources, I can immediately check if the source exists and if it says what the LLM thought it said. It often finds sources I wouldn't have thought to look up. But I would never trust it without checking, because it does often make them up.

Aarros @aarros.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
In general, LLMs are okay for anything where you can immediately check if they are right. For example: A piece of code works or it doesn't and you can check it very fast. But wrong advice on, say, taxes won't bite you until the tax man comes knocking. So LLMs: Good for code, avoid using for taxes.
1182
Aarros @aarros.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
LLMs are actually good for: 1. An enhanced typo checker. Most document programs can tell you if a word is misspelled, but an LLM can understand that you used the wrong word. 2. Writing a bit of code that you can immediately check. 3. Giving suggestions for where to get started. Suggest sources etc.

But of course media (often owned by said rich people) will try to create these massive scare scenarios of rich people all leaving because of a small wealth tax or something, while completely ignoring all the actual evidence and even the basic logic of such scenarios. It is disgusting.

Lazy or at least accustomed to having things exactly as they want it. And one of the most "not as I want it" things is having to move your whole life to a completely new place. Presumably, they live where they live because they like living there, not because of small differences in taxes etc.
120
Aarros @aarros.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
The thing about rich people is that they tend to also be lazy people. So consider their options: 1) Move your whole life to another state/country. or 2) Pay a small tax that makes zero difference in your actual quality of life anyway. Most will choose 2. That is why "exodus" doesn't happen.

It is hard to imagine a greater sign that Russia is losing and will lose the war, badly. Musk is one of the lowest pieces of repugnant cancer on this Earth. His predictions include brilliant insights such as him saying that there would be near-zero Covid cases in 2020.

He has zero relevant engineering skills, zero vision beyond "hurr durr Mars", he bought Tesla and then pretended to be its co-founder while his ideas actively made the cars worse, and so on. Stop giving him credit for the fake engineer personality he has built, he has zero technical skills.

Musk is absolutely not any sort of "outstanding systems engineer" or anything like that. He is a conman and a scammer, and always has been. Stop believing in his lies. The only thing he has achieved is having great marketing skills and not facing consequences of his constant scams and lies.

In my lifetime, I've seen segments of society lose trust in evolutionary biology, climate science, and vaccines. None of this was due to anything scientists did. All of it was because non-scientists perceived some advantage (political, cultural, financial) in attacking science's credibility.

So many people don't want to do any effort or learn any skill, ever, or even in general improve things, and they will be very aggressive if anyone ever suggests to them that perhaps they could do that too. Their ego cannot stand the idea of someone being better at something than they are.

It is riduclous to listen to anything Trump says. He has no right to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine or Europe, so anything he "negotiates" is completely empty and pointless. It is like me negotiating with my friend about the price the house of a man who doesn't know me or even want to sell.

People like her are selfish idiots who don't really believe in anything. Ask her if USA should do anything actually meaningful to help Ukraine (e.g. military aid and funding to Ukraine, sanctions against Russia) and she will suddenly go back to being a pro-Russia fanatic.

Ukrainian reconstruction and post-war progress. Issues between Poland and Ukraine, their history and how it is handled today. If Ukraine wants to join the EU, they will have to get Poland's approval, and that goes through a road of some heavy self-reflection of Ukraine's history, UPA etc.

Aarros @aarros.bsky.social · 01/07/2026
Ukraine will cause itself a lot of unnecessary trouble for its future like reconstruction and EU membership accession if they choose to honour bad or controversial people like those that killed Polish civilians.

Classic Russia: Claiming that there was some random verbal " broken promise" that justifies their aggression. Same story as with NATO expansion. Nevermind that nothing was written down, and USA has no right to unilaterally negotiate on behalf of Ukraine or the EU.

USA has a system where third parties are mathematically locked out. Therefore, to not run as D or R is to have no chance of winning. Basically, you are saying that "You are not allowed to have political opinions that D leadership disagrees with". Deeply, insanely disgusting and antidemocratic.

But with comma, I would put hot first, then wet, unless I am making some specific point or emphasis by using a different order. So "hot, wet summer".
000
Aarros @aarros.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
The comma makes a difference. Hot, wet summer is a summer that is both hot and wet. To be least ambiguous, I would say "Hot and wet summer". Adverbs in a row without comma or "and" may otherwise imply that the adjective closest to the noun is sort of part of the noun, not an adjective.
