Today I learned that TRPG history consists of- 1974 D&D happens 1974-1990 All dungeon hacking old school all the time 1991- Theatre kids invent Vampire the Masqurade and either save or destroy the hobby. Open the (tabletop) schools #trpg

I don't do internet arguments anymore, but there are some dipshit trpg accounts at the otherplace that I may be willing to make an exception for.

Silent Mobius would be a great one. I know there were some Doujinshi games based on Fate/Nasuverse and I'd love to get may hands on them. (I did write one for a campaign I ran lol)

Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
And that's the biggest sin here, it seems to just be another throwback post-OSR game. I own more TRPG manuals than most, you gotta compete with that pile I have at home and I got both slick aestheics and shadowdark in that pile already.

Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Oh there's death dice rather than luck dice because (something something juvenile aesthetics) , there's exploding damage dice. (Usually craptacular in my opinion as the internet's premier Savage Worlds hater) But other than that, not much more than a marketing budget...
110
Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
I do think there are limits to the "shitty people making a shitty game" crique but outside the juvenile aesthetics there doesn't really seem to be anything here? (based on the previews the marketing has put in my algo) It's Shadowdark mostly.

Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
Agreed on being critical of the critique and it being important to read them. On Deathbringer itself (aside from the juvinile aesthetics) I havn't really seen anything in previews that reads as much more than a Shadowdark reskin with some extra dice stuff? The OSR market is crowded...

It’s also a great tool against financial shocks, lender of last resort that the government can use to address widespread consumer financial issues. (Like deflating asset bubbles..)

I was going to say that, we have postal banking already. It’s also a good reason to halt the erosion of AusPost’s branch’s (esp in regional areas)

To be fair, along with Supers, mecha games are perhaps the hardest to design.

Horror games need something that makes the characters need to withdraw to safety from time to time. Even if that retreat is impractical. Horror comes from the contrast between safety and the horror, between rationality and fear. Sanity does that well, a foundation for other games to build on.
000
Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
It’s another and more subtle angle of risk and danger characters need to address. The longer you press on with an investigation the more it wares on you, the more you risk hitting that dreaded threshold of temporary or indefinite insanity.
100
Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
It’s not just HP for your brain. It really is about thresholds (a thing BRP does a bit), not just how many shocks your character can take over their career; but how intense a shock they can take in one sitting or over a short period.
110
Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
And I always liked sanity, although it’s misnamed and we never used indefinite insanity as written as it’s odd and clunky. But the core of it being effectively a “tension” mechanic is imho kind of genius.
Two page Spread from call of Cthulhu 3rd edition. Featuring a neat werewolf picture and one of those wonderful full colour glossy plates. This on of Mr Shiney, a reference to the story “Fat face” by Micheal Shea

Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Parts of it obviously seem dated in the year of our lord 2026 but even in its older editions it’s a pretty neat and easy to run game. It does what it says on the tin well and its longevity is testament to that.
100
Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Call of Cthulhu was the second or third TRPG I owned. (Palladium’s Robotech was the other possible silver medal winner) It was so different from D&D and Fighting fantasy that I never really “got” the game for a few years. But to be fair I was 11 at the time.
Cover of the Call of Cthulhu trpg 3rd edition. The edition I got when I was 11 and yes the binding did fall apart like all those GW published hardbacks.

Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
And you can not like him or his crappy opinions and still acknowledge that he contributed some pretty important stuff into the TRPG space. Call of Cthulhu was a landmark game, so was Ghostbusters. (With Lynn Willis and Greg Stafford ofc)

Watching Sandy Peterson transform from somewhat shitty conservative TRPG creator into full culture war blue tick on twitter engagement poster is pretty sad. Although watching John Romero consistently pull him up on his BS about Doom in realtime is satisfying.

Abolish the Job Networks, re-establish the CES. Bring in a 90% retrospective income tax on the owners of the networks for being awful (legality of this might be suss, but hey, it will give them an incentive to do something else)

I did not know this but it’s unsurprising. I’ve maintained that Gygax’s/TSR’s innovation was publishing the game materials for sale rather than developing the form itself. (Which then facilitated rapid development as D&D found a mass market)

Of course they would, they’d know if she had a model of Walkman with twin play head so it could switch sides without ejecting the cassette. No Cell service is often lazy but I think it can be used well. (Particularly in horror as it can mark a crossing over the threshold or highlighting isolation)

It was pretty obvious that the writer had never used a cassette Walkman before. If this was so vital you’d dub the song on both sides so you can turn it over and continue playing. But no the assumption is that it works like a VHS. It’s take a few minutes research to know that.

There is a bit in Stranger things that made me so mad. Mac has a tape with “running up that hill” on repeat to deal with Vecna possession. The scene his tense because the tape has reached its end and she needs to rewind it to start the song again. CASSETTES HAVE TWO SIDES.

These things get me angry with a fictional work to a cinema sins level. Name checking something in pop culture obviously without having experienced it or even taken the time to research it. Just careless, lazy writing using a common signifier to seem relevant.

Been watching videos of the top 50 songs in Australia from around 1970-1985 you'll get classic pop songs one after the other, then a random Greek song which end up ranking at like no 8 for 1975. (All thanks to the amazing archiving work on youtube of the late ohnoitsnathan)

It’s an adventure show focused on a family audience. It has sci fi elements, but its legacy and intended audience prevent it doing anything truely challenging or interesting sci fi wise outside a handful of episodes.
000
Aaron Fenwick @aaronwfenwick.bsky.social · 24/04/2026
Yeah it’s an adventure series with science fiction elements. There are a few strong eps but the last 25years has seen a lot of really good sci-fi on television, let alone films and books. (And if you allow non English stuff it’s a wipe out)
