I think we often concede the framing that things that aren't in themselves troubling — and I think in this case, obviously so — because people want them to be troubling to suit their priors and it has a pretty obvious negative feedback loo.

I think I am extremely tired of having to step delicately around the neurotic dispositions of this site, but that's clearly a me problem.

How can we support you until you admit you were wrong, at which point we will have a legitimate reason to not support you

"Yes, there's no monster under the bed *tonight,* but how dare you try and tell me that. How can you promise there won't be a monster under the bed *tomorrow*? Or even in the *closet.* How dare you imply my neurotic hypervigilance is anything other than correct"

Yeah, because that's what happened. This isn't how any of this works and it doesn't do anyone any benefit to shadowbox bullshit.

I do not (I mean, I do, but) understand why people hype preprint papers.

This is false, and spreading disinformation is bad whether the direction of the misinformation is positive or negative. (🎁)

Troops loitering near D.C. ballot box were not guarding it, National Guard says
Video of soldiers in front of an early-voting site concerned residents.

The "obvious, overt purpose" of the National Guard deployment is to provide an emotional boost to one Donald J. Trump and that is the beginning and end of it. He controls DC and he can get away with it like he can't anywhere else. It's bad! Don't pretend it's worse than it is!
Kyle D. Long @blatherscribe.bsky.social

But this is all ridiculous because the obvious, overt purpose of the National Guard in D.C. is intimidation. Everyone knows this. It's the people who pretend not to know this who are selling something. 2/2

And that wasn't what happened and isn't what's going to happen, but it hasn't prevented folks like this from spinning elaborate fantasies about how bad things would be bad. Yes! But that's not what happened!

Aaron van Dorn @aaronvandorn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think it's a mistake to conflate the National Guard, which in DC to date has only been dangerous to the National Guard, and ICE, and I don't think rounding the one up to the other is helpful.
100
Aaron van Dorn @aaronvandorn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Yes, the National Guard are like the KKK, this is a reasonable comparison and I'm not at all flying out of control
070
Aaron van Dorn @aaronvandorn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
This is what I'm talking about. We have a photo of National Guard standing around a ballot drop box. Are they doing anything? There's no evidence to indicate so. But we've immediately jumped from that to a free floating fantasy of them stopping people, attacking people, and the Insurrection Act.
280
Aaron van Dorn @aaronvandorn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think that's conflating two things, one of which is real and obviously unacceptable and then rounding that up to something much grander and that crucially isn't happening. If there's evidence that NG troops are preventing people from using ballot drops I'll retract, but there's no evidence of it.

Aaron van Dorn @aaronvandorn.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I know they're not intimidating anyone because I'm in DC twice a week and I see these guys walking around bored all the time. The presence of the National Guard in DC is unacceptable. This is not, however, voter intimidation.

I don't think needless and counterproductive fear mongering helps anyone, either, so here we are.

Also, no offense to DC (Statehood Now) but if you're going to start a program of military intimidation re: voting, DC and a midterm election are not where you should start.

Not to be all "you're getting sold" National Guard troops spend all day standing in out of the way corners of DC. Not great that they're standing in front of a ballot drop box, but c'mon, people, use some common sense. They're not stopping anyone from dropping something off.

Pales in comparison to "Flute Juice"
Dave Valentin's "Flute Juice" LP, which features a distressing looking air brushed waxed paper juice container that looks like it's made out of chromed metal with valves and keys like a flute.

Yeah, like this is stuff that I've always wanted to do, but I am a person with a full time job and responsibilities and I don't have time to learn how to get to a place where I could even begin to learn how I might approach creating something like this. It's cool that I can.
