rebranding transmission service to transmission-as-a-service (TaaS)

Ok but obviously Cajun music is more interesting and important

And even if it’s defined as an N-2 rather than N-1, could always just adjust the planning manual to require mitigations for P7 cont if they don’t already (i.e., rather than change cont definitions, change which cont require mitigations)

I will say, I’ve seen several ISOs and utilities situationally define the loss of a double circuit line as an N-1 cont (common tower) in planning studies (though not in ops) even though technically a common structure is a P7 so I think this is somewhat dependent on region/engineering judgement

Fwiw energy twitter also does not have the juice anymore. It’s so low signal it’s hard to justify even engaging anymore

someone needs to build an AI agent that’s sole purpose is to “retire” misaligned/nefarious AI agents and call it blade runner

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
Yep. And to be fair, I think some of their comments make good points. But also think that some of them miss the mark and would like to see some sort of analysis that explains their position
020
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 18/02/2025
Maybe they should share that “analysis” then? Have heard them bring up the issue in several meeting and have read their comments but haven’t seen it backed up by much in-depth analysis

In 1927 PSEG, PEC, and PPL interconnected their systems to pool power. This effectively was “interregional” transmission at the time. The same people fighting transmission today benefit massively from the interconnected system pioneered in the past that is what we know as “the grid” today.

Which again is different than what you said lol

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 15/02/2025
Eh, no not really. And the real point that you’re making here (or should be) is that capacity markets as currently constructed are nonsensical and certainly will need to be reformed

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 14/02/2025
That doesn’t equate to your meme. And thermal resources are not 100% reliable, which is why you see that dynamic (obviously)

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 14/02/2025
None of NERC’s modeling shows that renewables need 100% backup. Neither does MISO’s RIIA which you do frequently love to site.

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
Hard to speak in hypotheticals but doubt you’d need the same amount of duplicative cap. After all, this problem is the exact reason the grid was built in the first place. Did you happen to see my tweet ;)

That point was purely to point out that additional transmission capacity actually helps bring new gen online and has compounding effects
100
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
The last sentence there misses the mark for me, new Tx has the compounding effect of enabling additional generation. Even firm gen can’t get through an IX queue rn

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
The BA does not have control over the procurement of gas unless it is a utility that owns their own generation (so not applicable in the RTO regions for sure)
110
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
No one here is saying transmission will perform at 100% of nameplate all the time - just like generation doesn’t. But that is diff than saying it has zero reliability value. I suppose along this same vein you think nat gas has zero reliability value without firm gas contracts right?
110
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
I didn’t respond to that because that’s not a good indication that interregional lines have ~zero~ reliability value. It’s just an example of a case where they aren’t given winter accreditation (which may even be the right choice in that case, it’s very situational)
120
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
Yeah those points are obviously distinct. But I was responding to your assertion that cat is someone who knows what they’re talking about, which I don’t agree with (or maybe they’re are an industry participant and are just bad at it lol)
110
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 23/01/2025
Electric cat didn’t even know there was a difference between MISO’s current LRTP projects and the prior MVP projects so yeah I’d take their opinion with a grain of salt

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 20/01/2025
If the anti-RTO crowd is actually concerned with consumer protection, it’d be nice to see them advocate for minimum transparency requirements. The amount of data (both planning and operations) readily available in RTO regions versus traditional regions is stark

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
Agreed, I think part of the worry too is centered around the optics and risks of pushing this too much and it not materializing
030
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 15/01/2025
Risks…? The issue is, the even though the data center load growth forecasts can be duplicative, the power industry’s pace of change will still be the limiting factor to new development www.utilitydive.com/news/load-fo...

Been on a social media break for the best possible reason. Can’t express in words how proud I am. Both Momma and the boys are doing well thankfully. Their big sister has been a great helper so far and has adjusted well to no longer being the only child!

I’m proud of the hard work our team did to take the Transmission Facilitation Program from legislative text to a powerful tool for transmission deployment that provides real benefits to real people at low risk to taxpayers. This video shows some of those benefits. www.energy.gov/gdo/articles...

Also worth noting that load growth is just beginning. The biggest jumps in growth haven’t happened yet (for both data centers and electrification) - need to figure this out now if we want to be able to meet the moment in the future

Similar to what? Also not entirely sure on the decreased energy costs point your making. Of course, this is highly highly dependent on the commercial/reg structure of the Tx that gets built, but new ties should be optimized economically (still working on this)

My point is simply that interregional tx does have ~some~ cap and resiliency value (i can send a link to a study if interested) and shouldn’t be treated discriminately (its hard enough to get interregional tx built!)
110
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
oh i see, i thought you were referencing additional material that had modeled it or something! But yes, I agree you can’t just blindly assume full accreditation of the capacity of the interregional Tx. And if it helps, no region does that (in fact some regions don’t account for IR Tx at all).
110
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
Not all interregional Tx would have performed in that event, but some would have - just like generation. So far I’ve heard no reason why they should be treated differently

A winter storm being big doesnt mean there wasnt power avail! bsky.app/profile/aaro...

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
You have a link to those studies? That may be true for some regions like MISO/SPP or MISO/PJM but for instance, we modeled imports from WECC and found strong negative correlation (power would have been avail for import). And in some situations we’ve also looked into the avail of gas to confirm
100
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
But to the original question, I think there needs to be more effort in including correlated outages (and there is some movement on this) but since most of it is based on historicals, it’s not well captured at the moment (as @jacobmays.bsky.social pointed out)
120
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
Very much disagree here (obviously somewhat talking my book here). Need to look at the probability of the other region experiencing the same event. If the probabilistic analysis shows sig non-correlation I don’t see a reason why there shouldn’t be capacity value assigned to Tx

That’s exactly my point! The article is clearly wrong and half the replies are “see, these people are clearly stupid”

plus it’s not like the only savings are on bread, every other item on the grocery list might be cheaper too and going to a bigger town might be able to stop at other places as well
000
Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 31/12/2024
People replying to this are acting like all rural areas have grocery stores in the immediate area, so they assume instead of two hours these folks could walk to one or something. For instance we had about an hour round trip to the nearest grocery store, so two hours isn’t much further

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 30/12/2024
Yeah I like that (predicting cost + revenue). The tough piece is explaining that the modeling and analysis piece is only part of the job. The other part is knowing all the diff rules (IX procedures, planning processes, market dispatch, etc). But people’s eyes usually start glazing over by then haha

Aaron Stoll @aaronstoll.bsky.social · 30/12/2024
Would love to hear them, somehow I explain it poorly enough that pretty much no one knows what I do (outside of a few folks at work lol)
