I think we forget that the systems we live with today haven't always existed. Those systems were created by human beings and are not the outcome of an inevitable, infallibly objective mechanism. If they could change the way things operate, so can we.

It might be my default position to search for hope. I never think that all is completely lost forever. We have shown the capacity to build amazingly clever and/or complex systems, to change, to act intelligently and with heart. Yes, we do the opposite, but we have shown capacity for the former.

My bank is around 14% interest. It's all because they have an imaginary digital wall between the two accounts. Nothing stops them from sloshing some of that imaginary digital money over the imaginary digital wall to zero out the account if I want them to.

Something that never made sense to me. You have $20 in account A and $500 in account B, with the same bank. You spend $40 from account A, and now they get to charge you fees because you are overdrawn by $20. But they still have $480 of your money! What?

On the morning of 5 November 1881 an Irishman called Andrew Gilhooly formed up alongside other members of the Armed Constabulary at the entrance to Parihaka pã: he was there for the invasion, the occupation and - much later
- for the farming of land taken from Taranaki iwi. But those events dropped out of the family stories handed down to Gilhooly's ancestors; neither do they feature in national narratives of fairness, egalitarianism and equal treatment.
In this presentation Richard Shaw, one of Gilhoolys descendants, will explore the relationship between historical amnesia amongst (some) descendants of settler families and the stories we tell each other about the nation we live in.Cover of Richard's new book, the Good Settler: Essays from other people's lands

Luxon claiming to not even know who Hager is is either a lie or extremely politically ignorant. That's the first time in probably a decade that I've used "is is" in a sentence. Should there be a comma? Perhaps a semicolon? Just a space? Yep, let's stick with just a space. Is it a hate crime?

It is absolutely designed this way. Why? Because when you can't win on the facts, your only alternative is to turn to fiction. They know it works, too. We saw it in 1930s Germany. Tell lies confidently, and often enough people buy them or get so disillusioned that they disengage from the process.

For me, rain on a tin roof was perfect. But grew up in a rural area. It was what I was used to. The number of hearing tests I had was because I couldn't hear people talking to me. Hyperfocus got me lost in my own worlds... and also got me reading right through the night without realising. 😬

Oh, that's interesting. My ADHD brain requires the noise, but anything that starts with people speaking or singing lyrics is out. If that is introduced later and I'm in the zone, then I won't hear any of it. Many times my mother had to take a book out of my hands because I couldn't hear her. 😬

It depends. How bought-in are they (for now)? Is it a fun game that they hyperfocus on, or are they oppositional because they see through the game to the manipulation? If I see the manipulation or am not interested, then I'd be all over the map. If I'm bought in, it's hard to stop me.
