From @votevets.org on that other website - The trump admin has been taking down references to notable veterans that weren’t white men - erasing the likes of Jackie Robinson and Bea Arthur! The problem is - Republicans have abandoned vets, they don’t fund them & they don’t celebrate them.

Could it be, that sometimes part of using power is doing things you want to do when you have power even if it doesn’t poll +70? Could it also be, that by taking action and framing the conversation to how you want it, you could shape public opinion!?!?!!!!

Quote from NYT oped:

“It’s possible this is posturing to open negotiations, albeit for things that aren’t top of mind for most Americans: reducing fees for U.S. vessels transiting the Panama Canal or obtaining more access to resources and military bases in Greenland. “

John McCain voting to save the Affordable Care Act did not happen in a vaccum, and it didn’t happen exclusively because he was a “good man”. There was pressure, everywhere. Calls, letters, protests, demonstrations.

While I have finished my gumbo, I’m always thrilled to talk to people and keep the convo going. Also before you ask, it’s very unlikely you’ll ever see me cooking - as it looks like an unnecessarily frantic version of Hell’s Kitchen, with random outbursts of song. It doesn’t translate to film well.

I want to be snarky but this is an easy example of Erasure. Not only are there poor Black people (that have been systemically excluded and pushed out of these neighborhoods) - but black Americans across the country rank with highest wealth disparities. Finally, it’s a physical co-option!

Awww thank you! I think having close friends who fit into each square and us loving and supporting each other really helps with that.

021

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

It really depends on your point of view. I think that we all have our different roles; while your or I might feel more aligned to the Rebel, a reformer can be helpful If they’re effective. Now is Glinda effective? I’d actually say no. But I also do not think anyone besides Dr. Dillamund was.

120

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

These two women are friends, and have different skills, abilities and perspectives. In fact, even though they want the same thing (animal rights) they have different reasons for it! (Elphaba for personal reasons, and Glinda cause it matters to her friend).

1185

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

And Glinda is a Reformer! She believes in institutions, and power structures. She believes that she can enact change through relationships or public pressure, & use the power of leadership to ensure it lasts once she’s gone.

Grid describing 4 actors of social change - the citizen, the Reformer, the Rebel, and the Change Agent.

Check out the four roles of Social Activism by Bill Moyer- https://commonslibrary.org/the-four-roles-of-social-activism/

141

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

Elphaba is a Rebel! When she sees something is wrong, she calls attention to it, takes action and directs others to join her cause. She approaches the power structures to make change, and when they don’t act - she strikes out on her own to deliver justice!

131

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

Dr. Dillamund is a Change agent - he uses this position as a professor to educate his students & community about a problem and inspires people to take action. Fiero is a citizen - once educated he is willing to spring in to action to support those around him to make a change.

131

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

Preamble - this is for fun,& to illustrate a point, I’m open and excited to hear other perspectives. I’d like to introduce the 4 roles of activism by Bill Moyer (I’m sure there are other scholars, and additional roles. Share some of your faves in the comments) - commonslibrary.org/the-four-rol...

282

Aaron McCall @aaronmccall.bsky.social · 03/12/2024

Everyone is being very reductionist about Elphaba & Glinda in a way that makes me wonder if y’all watched the film, let alone the play. But I think it opens the door for a conversation around activism & roles people play. Who wants a quick wonky perspective on Wicked & Activism using 4 characters?
