I was surprised the environments were so wonky and cartoony coming from the film and Matsumoto's later work, which have very tight perspective. The Tekkonkinkreet manga is looser, more playful. It feels eyeballed and things are often warped, almost like Rocko's Modern Life.

Obviously Masaaki Yuasa later adapted Ping Pong, but between the unrestrained angles and freewheeling panel layouts, I suspect Matsumoto was a big influence on him even in the 90s too.

Things aren't framed neatly with characters posing for maximum clarity. The compositions are messy and chaotic, like a fly-on-the-wall doc. There's a real candidness and immediacy. Michael Arias captures this well in the film version by simulating handheld camerawork.

He doesn't avoid tricky angles or expressions. Complete lack of concern with "appeal". So much cartoon design (western & anime) involves cheating things to look more graphically pleasing, but Matsumoto goes for naturalism and raw ugly humanity, which is appealing in its own way.

I finally read Taiyo Matsumoto's Tekkonkinkreet manga. I loved the film version and his later manga but this was my first time seeing his early style. He got more refined later on, but even here there's a sense of total confidence and naturalism.

RIP Yuji Ohno. His music on the Lupin III series, countless other shows and solo albums are an incredible body of work. I learned so much about composing and keyboard from studying his songs. Also I like that one of his bands was called Super Sexual Transport.
