I strongly believe that design craft will be a differentiator in the era of AI. That's why I've decided to allocate at least 30 minutes a day for play, experimentation, and exploration. Here is a recap of the past couple of weeks. #designsky

This so much! So many portfolios waste the most important real estate on a generic phrase. If your name can be substituted and it still works, then it isn’t unique to you.

It's been a while since I designed something in my free time.
A screenshot of a "Workflows" dashboard displaying a table with columns for Workflow, Status, Frequency, Next Run, and Owner. Several example workflows are visible, showing different statuses like 'Active,' 'Paused,' and 'Archived,' along with various frequencies and future run dates. The interface includes a search bar, a filter button, and a 'Create workflow' button.

I actually really enjoy their games 😂 But I also agree that their notifications are mostly engagement bait.

I'm concerned about short-form video content. A quick search yields dozens of research papers finding evidence that short-form video content negatively impacts attention spans. I've also heard a lot of anecdotal evidence. Big companies just want more engagement, but at what cost?

Delightful feature of the day: switching devices for an on-going Zoom call. It's so convenient and smooth! #designsky

It feels weird to already say "happy holidays" or "see you next year" to some coworkers in the office—one of the oddities of working in an optional hybrid environment.

I was recently thinking about this! With AI inherently changing how search works, advertising is going to change too. I'm also predicting that when AR becomes mainstream, that we will have virtual billboards all over the place 🫣

I ran a usability study today and forgot to change the access settings for the Figma prototype. Had to figure out on-the-go how to change it while the participant was waiting 🫣 #designsky

Today, I learned why the Chart Increasing 📈 emoji uses a red line. In Japan, where emojis originated, red is traditionally used to indicate increases in stock values. #designsky

There are definitely pros and cons. Twitter and Threads are super aggressive with their algorithm, making it easy to get a design focused feed. Bluesky in my opinion is heavily focused on building up your own feed.

"We don’t accomplish anything when we try to convince people we are right. Instead, we need to find ways of making small changes that they can agree with." This quote from Teresa Torres is gold!

Even if it doesn't stay on the screen it would still be nice! The only thing is if it's provided by the cinema, then people could steal them easily. Also, people like me already have prescription glasses. So Bring Your Own Glasses would still be best in my opinion.

Aaron Ang @aaronang.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
I can't wait for a future where we can bring AR glasses to the cinema and connect them to the closed captioning system. The current closed captioning devices are quite clunky to set up. AR glasses recording movies would be an issue though.
A photo taken inside a movie theater showing a closed captioning device in the foreground. The device displays green text reading, "AMC Theatres - Captions start with Feature Presentation." In the background, the movie screen shows a scene with two characters standing in a scenic outdoor setting, slightly blurred for focus on the captioning device. The seating area and ceiling grid are dimly visible in the theater's darkened environment.

Why do we use the word "resources" to refer to our coworkers? Why don't we just say "people"? Before: We don't have enough resources for this project. After: We don't have enough people for this project. Someone please help me understand.

Listening just for validation is a common pitfall. I see so many people asking biased questions diminishing the value of user research. There are some really good books out there on how to ask questions. But if I had to pick one that is accessible, I would recommend The Mom Test.

One possibility is that they found that most of their customers shop from their phones? Not sure if consistency between desktop and mobile was the right choice here though. I'm assuming they are either experimenting or have already found evidence that this leads to more revenue.
