I strongly believe that design craft will be a differentiator in the era of AI. That's why I've decided to allocate at least 30 minutes a day for play, experimentation, and exploration. Here is a recap of the past couple of weeks. #designsky

It's been a while since I designed something in my free time.
A screenshot of a "Workflows" dashboard displaying a table with columns for Workflow, Status, Frequency, Next Run, and Owner. Several example workflows are visible, showing different statuses like 'Active,' 'Paused,' and 'Archived,' along with various frequencies and future run dates. The interface includes a search bar, a filter button, and a 'Create workflow' button.

I'm concerned about short-form video content. A quick search yields dozens of research papers finding evidence that short-form video content negatively impacts attention spans. I've also heard a lot of anecdotal evidence. Big companies just want more engagement, but at what cost?

Aren't most companies just working in a waterfall approach disguised as agile?

Delightful feature of the day: switching devices for an on-going Zoom call. It's so convenient and smooth! #designsky
Screenshot of Zoom macOS application. At the top, there is a message bar with a "Switch" button to switch the on-going Zoom call from a Pixel 8 device to macOS.

It feels weird to already say "happy holidays" or "see you next year" to some coworkers in the office—one of the oddities of working in an optional hybrid environment.

I ran a usability study today and forgot to change the access settings for the Figma prototype. Had to figure out on-the-go how to change it while the participant was waiting 🫣 #designsky

Today, I learned why the Chart Increasing 📈 emoji uses a red line. In Japan, where emojis originated, red is traditionally used to indicate increases in stock values. #designsky

"We don’t accomplish anything when we try to convince people we are right. Instead, we need to find ways of making small changes that they can agree with." This quote from Teresa Torres is gold!

I can't wait for a future where we can bring AR glasses to the cinema and connect them to the closed captioning system. The current closed captioning devices are quite clunky to set up. AR glasses recording movies would be an issue though.
A photo taken inside a movie theater showing a closed captioning device in the foreground. The device displays green text reading, "AMC Theatres - Captions start with Feature Presentation." In the background, the movie screen shows a scene with two characters standing in a scenic outdoor setting, slightly blurred for focus on the captioning device. The seating area and ceiling grid are dimly visible in the theater's darkened environment.

Why do we use the word "resources" to refer to our coworkers? Why don't we just say "people"? Before: We don't have enough resources for this project. After: We don't have enough people for this project. Someone please help me understand.

This is the worst. It's almost 2 AM and I can't fall asleep. I keep thinking about what I want to do with my career 🫠 Do I want to try breaking into product management? How do I become a better product designer?

How is everyone handling situations in Figma where changes to a component propagate to frames already marked as ready for dev? #designsky

Advice I would give to people interested in UX: 1. Complete the Google UX course to understand what UX is. 2. Design something at least 30 minutes a day and share your work in progress. 3. Make use of ADPList to receive mentorship. 4. Follow advice that resonates with you regarding your portfolio.

I would love for @figma.com to make community files collaborative. For example, if I were to publish a Bluesky UI Kit as a community file, why couldn’t someone create a branch, and make a merge request? This would be a huge win for the open source community.

Sitting in on a user research study is always so inspiring! Even if it's not the product area I'm working on. Will make it my goal to attend at least one per week.

Is "id.atlassian.net" legit? The two-factor code was sent from "id.atlassian.com". Is this the actual onboarding experience or was I part of a phishing attack?

Will AI replace product designers? A key part of our role is helping stakeholders align and identify the right problems to solve. I often think about how our work drives meaningful business impact. I don’t think AI is anywhere close to achieving that yet.

Feeling pretty lost lately with my product design career. I'm not making the impact I want. I constantly think about how to improve as a product designer. The least I can do is create or copy designs daily. So, here's a small step towards building a Bluesky UI Kit in Figma.
