I bought a case of Rice Krispie Treats on a whim and now I bring some to gaming night. To limit how many I eat, I wrote a note on each so I could only eat it if that event happened. We found a stirge nest as second level characters. I are all the Treats.
Four Treats, each with a hand-written note in a designated area of white: combat treat, crit treat, encounter treat, save treat. The are next to an iPad mini (showing a character sheet) on a stand over a small dice tray, all on a bigger table.A table with a television set into it showing a map of tunnels and rubble, with a few character minis being swarmed by small, red, four-winged, spiked-nose baddies

Yeah, that’s the scenario for using the scrolling container to pass SC 1.4.10 (width / inline axis only). And now I understand. You want col headers in *that* container to act as page-level (anchoring to page / viewport). Which, sadly, nope. Mostly I limit table container height to viewport.

Sure, yeah, leaving scrolling as-is versus using CSS to do something else is largely what I mean. If the content is bleeding out horizontally, that suggests the *need* for that content to scroll (tho, ick) or there’s a larger content strategy problem. Saying this all in a vacuum, mind.

Adrian Roselli, pH0 @aardrian.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
My demos do not account for authors overriding native scroll behavior. It is unlikely I ever will given how much extra risk that brings. > The only way to fix that would be to add a `height` property to that containing element. Restoring native scroll behavior is the *other* only way.
100
Adrian Roselli, pH0 @aardrian.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
The scrolling would only kick in for the height (or block axis) if you forced it to *not* let it flow into the page itself. If you don’t want to set the height *and* you want the sticky column headers to be on the body, then the first Codepen I shared would do it. So I assume I still don’ get it.

In short: having a non-interactive element receive keyboard focus / be tab-able does not fail 2.4.3. If the non-interactive element that receives focus only exposes a role of "generic" or similar, that's not a failure of 4.1.2, as it exposes the correct role for what it represents.
