Some photos I took during a two week vacation in Italy.

Some sketchbook drawings I did in the Natural History Museum in Karlsruhe. A great place to go sketching. I was with my 6 yo daughter so I didn’t get the time to sketch as much as I’d have liked, hope to go back there sometime!

too bad! I'm building up quite the Beuville collection but don't have any of his books that have those illustrated letters yet, so I was curious which one these came from.

Nice! Are these all from the same book?

Very cool thank you! I guessed the chisel looking things (haha, this is their official name now) had to do with the gravel but never imagined it was needed to make sure it stays under the ties. (also pretty sure the one I spotted is a Plasser and Theurer based on the pics on wikipedia)

Spotted this cool train in Armentières, France. Absolutely no idea what it’s for. Can’t look at stuff like this without thinking of an @ianmcque.bsky.social drawing

Photo of some kind of diesel powered maintenance train, very dusty and weathered.

Another angle of the working parts of the maintenance train, no idea what they’re for

Just found out that the website of Evan Richards is closing down. His fantastic library of film stills has already been taken offline. There are other sites like this, but this was one of my favorite resources of cinematic reference. Makes me sad to see it gone.

As for film versions, although not an adaptation Heat of course is very Parker-like but Ronin is in some ways even closer. The team coming together, the preparations, finding the weak spots in the team and the plan and the betrayal by another team member are the beats of many Parker books.

Joscha van Deijk @aapstra.bsky.social · 15/01/2026

I love all the Parker books! Just finished rereading the first series (hunter-butcher moon). Slayground and Butcher’s Moon are many people’s favorites, but they are actually also quite different from the rest of the series. I love the ones where it is all about the job.

Name that Movie! A deck of storyboard panels from @aapstra.bsky.social! Ordered a long time ago but delayed by US regime shenanigans, finally arrived today and it is awesome. Thanks to @patrickhwillems.bsky.social for introducing me to the deck in one of his Q&A videos.

Genius editor Thelma Schoonmaker is 86. I love her definition of editing: ‘Editing is really like plumbing a good deal of the time. You put two things together, and a current runs through it.’

my pet theory is that the Anton Chigur we see in the film is a Rolo Tomassi like character, who Bell created from the contradictory evidence and witness statements he collected.

Have been going on something of a Beuville buying streak recently. I absolutely love the work of Georges Beuville but his books can be hard to come by, so I’m really happy that I was able to find all these!

They showed this on the biggest screen in Eye Amsterdam (film museum/ cinema) when Demme passed away. Those shots with characters looking directly into the camera were so intense! One of my favorite movies.

Lions escape in Amsterdam Stripclub: Yesterday the Amsterdam newspaper Het Parool shared this story from 1967. Amsterdam in the 60's was a pretty wild place!

On Friday, November 24, 1967, Theo de Vlieger, head zookeeper at the Amsterdam Zoo Artis, visited Kees Manders’s nightclub in the former Chez Gaston restaurant on Thorbeckeplein. He was accompanied by a police officer to review the permit application of striptease dancer Eja “Cleopatra” Kruiswegt, whose act involved two full-grown lionesses.
As De Vlieger approached the cage, one of the lionesses lunged, seized him and dragged him toward the bars. Club owner Manders didn’t hesitate: he rushed forward, opened the enclosure, and drove the animal back with a stick and loud shouting. The attack stopped, allowing everyone to run for safety. In the ensuing panic the cage was left open, allowing the lionesses to wander into the nightclub. Austrian lion tamer Alwin Frans Burghardt was quickly summoned and managed to force the animals back inside. De Vlieger was taken to the hospital
with serious wounds to his right hand and left arm. He later admitted he had misjudged both the lionesses’ speed and the strength of the cage.
It was not the first time the animals caused a stir that week. Days earlier, police had found the same two lionesses left unattended in a parked car on the corner of Thorbeckeplein and Herengracht, after receiving a tip from a local resident. When an officer opened a hatch to check, a claw lashed out, nearly catching him. The car was impounded at police headquarters, where it was found to have defective brakes and a broken handbrake. Cleopatra was later allowed to retrieve the lionesses and kept them temporarily behind the Carré Theatre.

And I have two questions that I keep thinking about: 1. Wasn't it better to just have someone else sit there in the hat and coat, facing away from the camera? 2. Did Spielberg know he was going to get away with this as he was shooting it...? (If you happen to run into him please ask him for me 😅)

Joscha van Deijk @aapstra.bsky.social · 28/08/2025

For some reason the actor playing Major Toht wasn't available when they did this shot, so they ended up just replacing him with his signature hat and coat! And if you don't know it, you don't see it--
