“Evil comes from a failure to think. It defies thought for as soon as thought tries to engage itself with evil and examine the premises and principles from which it originates, it is frustrated because it finds nothing there. That is the banality of evil.” Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem

'An English Holiday, a Village Inn,’ was one of several panels of a mural depicting scenes from rural life that Lord Beaverbrook commissioned from Mary Adshead in 1928 for the dining room at his house in Newmarket; the mural was cancelled, the panels were later shown in London.

#ArtHistory 🗃️ 🐡 🎨 #dragons Happy Sunday, Bluesky Discover how three master painters turned the legend of Saint George and the Dragon into a masterclass in human psychology—and a study in how cultural norms take root New from me: theshymuseumgoer.com/2026/09/16/saint-george-and-dragon-paintings/
Raphael's 1503 oil painting of Saint George in full armor riding a white horse. He raises a sword above his head to strike a winged, scaly dragon caught beneath the horse's hooves. In the background, a princess in a long red dress flees. • Three years later, Raphael will paint this subject again—after running into Leonardo da Vinci in Florence.

#ArtHistory 🗃️ 🐡 🎨 Saturday vibes... A tribute to everyday chores. A woman and a child hold hands, having just collected something for dinner in a bowl and the child's pinafore. A broom leans on freshly swept cobblestones. 🧹✨ Pieter de Hooch, "Courtyard of a House in Delft" (1658)
Pieter de Hooch "Courtyard of a House in Delft" (1658) • An oil painting of a 17th-century Dutch brick courtyard bathed in soft afternoon light. On the right, a woman in a blue skirt holds the hand of a young girl. They stand on stone steps near an open door, carrying food gathered for dinner in a bowl and the child's pinafore. A broom leans against the cleanly swept cobblestones nearby. On the left, an open brick archway features an inscribed stone above it, leading the eye down a shadowed corridor where a woman stands looking out toward a sunlit street in the distance. • Fun fact: The stone plaque above the archway was real. De Hooch copied it from a local Delft monastery. The text says you must practice "patience and meekness" through humble tasks—a perfect nod to the chores happening right below it.

“encourager les autres” The gates of hell are open night and day; Smooth the descent, and easy is the way: But to return, and view the cheerful skies, In this the task and mighty labor lies. Virgil

“These with a thousand small deliberations Protract the profit of their chilled delirium, Excite the membrane, when the sense has cooled, With pungent sauces, multiply variety In a wilderness of mirrors.” “I an old man, A dull head among windy spaces.” TS Eliot Gerontion

A true story for you, my lovelies. #Trump #Gas #LakeOntario #PoliticalCartoons #Google #Food
A cartoon of a woman pumping gas and talking to another woman in the car and it says “which is crazier? That Google maps displays the name Lake America to Americans only, while it shows Lake Ontario to the world? Or that I just paid 7.90 a gallon?“

Imho this is like a contemporary Edward Hopper painting:

Today's @artukdotorg.bsky.social #OnlineArtExchange celebrates Scottish art with West Sands (St Andrews), July by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912–2004). Born in St Andrews, she became a leading figure in British modern art despite the challenges faced by many women artists of her generation.
A minimalist painting shows a pale, sandy landscape with thin, dark, wavy lines suggesting dunes under a soft, muted pink and lavender sky horizon.
