Insult to injury. Day 3 this bug has added stomach troubles so an easy rice dish was called for. 2 measures rice, 1 cup broccoli, Kirkland No Salt, Better Than Veg bouillon, reduced sodium, roasted garlic, veg butter, white pepper, paprika. About 4 servings. All into the rice cooker at once. Easy.

I was on a panel with immigrant women yesterday and one of them explained how it felt to first be elected and be celebrated for your identity, and then for the institutions to turn on you when you actually bring your perspective and ask for change. She described it as going from “pet to threat.” 😮‍💨

Journalism lives! The Mercury included a history of the police’s actions in 2020, adding necessary context to the frankly popular anti-police sentiment that arose and still reverberates. I shouldn’t feel relieved to see a paper not just parroting conservative talking points, but it’s uncommon now.

The point that many of Green's detractors have missed, in their rush to shame the councilor, is that Portland police have a storied history of racialized and politicized violence. Coordinated attacks against those who criticize the institution must be called out for their anti-democratic nature-
particularly during such a heated election season.

"When we talk about accountability... oftentimes, people are looking for a form of punishment," Day said. "I believe accountability and culture change occurs around corrective action, and that discipline is intended to change behavior. We're not into punishing people. We're into changing behavior."
If that's true, then Councilor Green deserves the same courtesy Day has extended to the Bureau since taking office.
