Threats to funding basic research are at an all-time high. But despite often sounding obscure, basic research can have majorly beneficial outcomes. Research into lizard venom, for example, led to a breakthrough discovery that created one of the most widely used diabetes treatments in the world.

The OMB proposed rule puts federally funded research at risk – research that can often lead to major societal impacts. In one example, studies funded by the USDA allowed for the development of a novel method of eradicating screwworm flies, which has saved the livestock industry billions of dollars.
