Al living between two worlds in two ways - mixed race but also as a young party boy also trying to be respectable and keep his radio job.
So a lot of progressive views at the speakeasies, women in men's clothing, promiscuous clothing, homosexuality... but broadcasting to a wider public that didn't necessarily like all of those things.
In his younger years a lot of men as providers, women as delicate homemakers got soaked into the brain
I do think Al has a certain respect for women because of his mother. but that's more headcanon than anything, and doesn't necessarily preclude him also viewing them as weaker.
He was raised to be a gentleman! and some of that means that he was raised to view women as needing to be cared for and men as inherently competition. Even if he doesn't care for the typical things that men are fighting over (women, status)

Continuation of the previous screenshot that reads: that men are fighting over (women, status) he knows that the underlying struggle is really for POWER, which is what Al is all about. He has to establish himself as too much of a threat to bother with right away, or he's at risk.
I kind of want to watch the show and look at what exactly about Al makes people view him as effeminate. I mean, there's the pink suit, which I'm pretty sure in Al's time red and pink were considered more masculine colors (double check that). But I think a lot of it is that his plays at being gentlemanly come off as more effeminate because we live in a period where men are focused more on being assertive than being polite. Not that Al isn't like. Assertive. And rude. Honestly it's really interesting I need to look into this more. He has us fooled!
Alastor's general view of himself as other - and the mental decision he makes to prefer that (whether it's a natural inclination or something that he ended up on due to feelings of alienation in life, who knows!)
