It is nice that he just comes right out with “yeah white people are generally kind of isolationist racist freaks ya know”
“Tolkien himself was influenced a lot by Norse mythology, there’s a lot of that feeling,” Serkis explained about the lack of the diversity. “The Shire feels very, very much like a very, a very white, you know… They’re not very concerned about what goes on beyond the borders of The Shire, but they know they don’t want people coming in.”

The text beginning with “The Shire feels…” is highlighted through to the end.

This, I think, is the key thing that "AI can do anything" crowd fundamentally does not understand. AI cannot do real, material work. Workers do that, and they want to replace (or depress the wages of) workers; when in fact AI is really only good* at management tasks. *ymmv
The Thesis
AI doesn't need to drive a tractor. It needs to orchestrate the systems and people who do.

A farm manager doesn't personally plant every seed. They aggregate data, make decisions, coordinate contractors. Claude Code becomes that farm manager— 24/7, data-driven, fully documented.

Hacker News comment on a thread about gas town.

“
dchuk 15 hours ago | parent | context | favorite | on: Gas Town Decoded

I’m very bought in to the idea that raw coding is now a solved problem with the current models and agentic harnesses. Let alone what’s coming in the near term.

[highlighted portion]
That being said, I think we’re in a weird phase right now where people’s obvious mental health issues are appearing as “hyper productivity” due to the use of these tools to absolutely spam out code that isn’t necessarily broadly coherent but is locally impressive. I’m watching multiple people both publicly and privately clearly breaking down mentally because of the “power” AI is bestowing on them. Their wires are completely crossed when it comes to the value of outputs vs outcomes and they’re espousing generated nonsense as it’s thoughtful insight.
[end highlighted portion]

It’s an interesting thing to watch play out.”

i did a spit take, surely someone should have doublechecked this headline (this is from 40 years ago, not today)
White Supremacist Jury Ends Fourth Day Without Verdict

Jurors deliberating the fate of 10 white supremacists ended a fourth day Friday without reaching a verdict in the sprawling racketeering case. The panel halted discussions at 3 p.m. and returns Monday to weigh 44 criminal counts against members of The Order. The defendants stand accused of running a violent conspiracy in 1983 and 1984 involving two murders, four robberies, arson, and counterfeiting millions. throughout the three-month trial, prosecutors outlined the sect’s specific efforts to fund a race war through crime. During deliberations, the jury requested to hear specific evidence tapes but asked U.S. District Judge Walter McGovern no legal questions before breaking for the weekend. The eventual verdict determines culpability for a terror campaign that left two dead and stole millions.

Little bit of follow up: the Known Variable Region
000
Andrew @a.ndrw.dev · 05/12/2025
@hotdogsladies.bsky.social this week's DBF got me to ask the robot what it knew about me, which then led to this little gem. my garage microclimate is a known variable region
If you want, I can also format this like:

A “ReadMe.md”

A more humorous/manual style (“Operating Instructions for Andrew”)

A short reference card

Or a more formal dossier

Just tell me the style you want.

give me the operating instructions

Here you go — “Operating Instructions for Andrew Mason” in a clean, slightly cheeky, but fully respectful manual style.8. SAFETY WARNINGS

Do not overload with high-stakes ambiguity.

Avoid rapid forced assertiveness; system prefers gradual ramp-up.

Do not assume classical plant overwintering behavior — Andrew’s garage microclimate is a known variable region.

To our Friends and Fans:

You may have heard that the Farmer’s Almanac, based out of Lewiston, ME, is ceasing publication after an incredible 200+ year run.

Over the years, there has been some confusion between different almanacs, so to be clear: The OLD Farmer’s Almanac isn’t going anywhere. As we have since 1792, during George Washington’s presidency, we will continue to publish our annual edition, while educating and entertaining readers online at Almanac.com.
