I think the oddest thing is how whatever magical math you used you actually managed to exactly pinpoint my age. Yes, I am 54 years old.

If it had to be "one book," then ONWARDS TOWARDS OUR NOBLE DEATHS by Shigeru Mizuki But for the better version, the four-volume SHOWA: A HISTORY OF JAPAN. Anyone even remotely interested in the Pacific theater of WWII should have read that series by now.

Saying "I will learn this word in English but I refuse to learn this other word in English" is stupid. When you speak Japanese, are there words you refuse to say in Japanese but will only say in Spanish?
110
Zack Davisson @zackdavisson.com · 11h
Then refuse to speak English. Its a choice you can make.

Zack Davisson @zackdavisson.com · 11h
Then you should learn them in English if you are speaking English, just like any other words. Do you think I can use the English Dragonball attacks when speaking Japanese just because that's what I grew up with? No. I learn how they are said in the language I am speaking.

I've found that the struggle with loan words usually hits around the intermediate stage. They've learned how to pronounce a word they already know in their acquired language and internalize that as "correct" instead of "different" But "correct" is the pronunciation of the language you're speaking

Yeah, because that is the official English title. Sometimes they keep the original language title as the official English title. And then that becomes the correct title to say in English. Like Das Boot. If you say "The Boat" you are saying it wrong.

My Eternal Mission and Message: 1) Mizuki Shigeru is one of the greatest artists to ever work in comics 2) Shonen Knife is one of the greatest bands ever 3) Midnight Diner is one of the best TV shows of all time If you learn those three things, I will have done my job.

I should hope so, as Dorohedoro is the official English title and anyone saying anything other than Dorohedoro would be incorrect.

Using the Japanese pronunciation while speaking English does not facilitate communication. Insisting on using the English pronunciations of loan words while speaking Japanese is equally a mistake I wouldn't say "hamburger" instead of ハンバーガー when speaking Japanese. Thats not how loan words work

Zack Davisson @zackdavisson.com · 16h
Using the Japanese pronunciation of "sah-kay" while speaking English is as much of a mistake as using the English pronunciation of "sah-key" while speaking Japanese. Loan words should use the proper pronunciation of the language being spoken.
190
Zack Davisson @zackdavisson.com · 17h
This is an issue with language learners at an early stage. They fail to understand the concept of loan words and pronunciation. Sake is an English word. It is pronounced "sah-key" and means brewed Japanese rice wine 酒 is a Japanese word. It is pronounced "sah-kay" and is a general word for alcohol

You point does stand, because your point was "Instead of reading and responding to what he is actually writing I am going to respond to what I assume he is writing. That way I dont have to put in the work and can just blather my incorrect response back as fast as possible." Yes. That is clear.

And there comes out the pretentious fuck, right on schedule. "Oh, you don't speak Japanese? Allow me to dumb myself down to your level. I just assumed..." You can't even admit to yourself what you are doing.

If I am thinking in Japanese I use the Japanese words. If I am thinking in English I use the English words. Same with speaking. The goal is not to mix and match. Unless you are speaking to another bilingual person in which case things get messy...

Into the Woods is a great fucking musical.

I don't believe it is. Otherwise there is zero reason to use terms that the person you are speaking with would not understand over choosing the available words that they would understand.

Then I will not be a smug dick and insist on peppering my conversation with Japanese titles. I will not say: "Yes, I love Kurosawa Akira. Shichinin no Samurai is my favorite." Because I want the other person to fucking understand what I am talking about... AKA communication.

Zack Davisson @zackdavisson.com · 17h
I wanted everyone to know that I knew Japanese and they didn't. And I wanted them to bow down before me for that. But then... I actually DID learn Japanese and realized how fucking stupid I had been. The purpose of language is communication. If I am communicating to someone in English...

Zack Davisson @zackdavisson.com · 17h
Look, I did the same thing when I was first learning Japanese. I used the Japanese titles for things and say that "Tonari no Totoro" just sounded better than "My Neighbor Totoro." It was all lies. I was doing it for the same reason everyone does it--to show off and look cool.
