Yes indeed! Very nice! Figuring out the shapes of the shadows is a good 1st step in making your work look more 3D! I recommend trying it out on your next few pieces. If you're looking for a practice, I recommend fabric studies and still life!

Thinking of any object as a series of planes and their relationship to the direction of the light source will help you immensely in figuring out where to put your shadows!

In this regard I think it's helpful to consider the box rendering exercise. You draw a box and then pick a lighting scenario and each face of the box is lit up to different degrees giving you shadow shapes. In the same way, a face has planes also has shadow shapes, just more complex ones.

I see! So it seems like you understand the notion of lighting direction but when it comes to how to cast a shadow on a 3D object you hit a wall. This is actually more of a shape issue than one of value. Understanding an object in 3D gives you a better understanding of what shadow shapes are cast.

Teaching is hard. Don't push students at all and they get bored and don't do the work. Push them too hard and they fail and their self image implodes and it needs to be built up again.
