I had the honor of playing the saw for Marlene's grandson on one occasion, and on another an audience member told me he was a soldier when Marlene came to perform for the troops. So I can attest from first hand reports I heard that what you wrote is true. open.spotify.com/album/2ezZhd...

Sure, I don't mind playing acapella for a bit - actually, Sunday I will play an acapella medley of Amazing Grace & America the Beautiful at a luncheon marking the signing of the declaration of Independence (at the oldest church on SI) so I'll be practicing it in the subway tomorrow and Thursday :)

Saw Lady @sawlady.bsky.social · 27/07/2026

The documentary is wonderful. I had the honor of meeting some of the people in it in person: Clara Rockmore, Robert Moog & David McCornack, who built my theremin. Confession: my theremin is collecting dust in my basement. If only there were more than 24 hours in a day, to do all we want to do...

170

Saw Lady @sawlady.bsky.social · 27/07/2026

Thank you for your kind words, dear Angus! As an aside, the reason why I play with recorded backup tracks is of course because I can't bring an accompanist with me, but also, because I get bored playing acapella (no accompaniment). I try to keep the backup at a lower volume than the saw sound.

Saw Lady @sawlady.bsky.social · 27/07/2026

You have good ears: when Leon Theremin invented his instrument, the saw was a popular musical instrument & Leon aimed to imitate its sound electronically. He did a great job! (This was told to me by his protege, amazing thereminist Clara Rockmore). cc: @chris.zahller.me @bullcityfats.bsky.social
