We created test accounts registered as 13-year-olds and enabled TikTok’s ‘restricted mode’, which the platform markets to parents as a way of limiting exposure to inappropriate content. All the accounts were rapidly exposed to content promoting eating disorders, self-harm and romanticising suicide.
