My evening has been spent programming AudioMoths for passive monitoring of birds in the Port Hills of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. When I swap over the units tomorrow it will mark 12 months of recording across 14 sites, from Ahuriri Bush in the west to Jollies Bush […] [Original post on mastodon.nz]

Our prototype NanoMoths are going out for field trials this week. Weighs just 6g including a 150 mAh Li-Ion battery and not much bigger than a micro SD card. Supports all the features of standard AudioMoth up to 192 kHz sampling rate.

Great paper describing how HydroMoth can be calibrated to provide SPL measurements accurate to 1–3 dB across a frequency range of 100 - 1000 Hz. journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

If you use the AudioMoth GPS Board or GPS Hat to synchronise recordings, you can now select between interpolation or nearest neighbour resampling algorithms when generating the final GPS-synchronised recordings.

The heat wave has provided a good test of our satellite-connected AudioMoth which uses an Arribada @arribada-i.bsky.social SMD Argos module to transmit live status information from anywhere on the planet.

Scientists have discovered hedgehogs may be communicating at frequencies up to 85 kHz. Set an AudioMoth to a sample rate of 192 kHz or higher and you can try listening in! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The left image shows an Open Acoustic Devices team member testing the first version of AudioMoth 1.0.0 with Lora radio integration in a Belize tropical forest. The AudioMoth is housed in an early prototype enclosure consisting of layers of clear acrylic laser cut sheets. Initial findings in 2018 indicated a wireless range of less than 50 metres. 

The right image depicts the same team member testing the integration of satellite communication on AudioMoth Dev for real-time alerts and status updates on a remote location on the Isle of Wight, UK. If you use the AudioMoth GPS Sync firmware, there is a new firmware version and app out which better supports long recordings. Synchronised output files that were previously limited by the 4.3GB WAV file length limit will split into multiple files. www.openacousticdevices.info/gps-sync

Using AudioMoths from @openacousticdevices.info we recorded vineyard soundscapes and then characterised them using acoustic indices We showed that vineyards with higher bird species richness 🐦 had more diverse and louder soundscapes 🎶 3/6 🧵

Fifty years ago today, Paul Allen and Bill Gates released the first version of their BASIC interpreter for the Altair 8800. The video shows the original binary being emulated on an @openacousticdevices.info AudioMoth with the teleprinter being simulated by USB serial.
