Gorgeous! Are these Symphyotrichum oblongifolium?

Nambroth @nambroth.bsky.social · 09/10/2026

I wish I could see our lands back when such birds were indeed common (till then I'll just keep trying to help them get more common again)

Due to necessity, straight from the tube, and tiny amounts of safflower oil if I need them to calm down a bit.

"In the Ancient Hallowed Places" Ovenbird with Six-spotted Tiger Beetle 10"x24" oil painting on panel The beautiful conglomerate rocks of an ancient sea floor; buried and lifted and revealed and eroded, the life that once was and is again, complex and beautiful and interconnected across time. 🪶🐡

A long format oil painting showing a cropped rock formation of ancient conglomerate, cracked and looming in its current form by water, ice, and time. A wash of moss and lichens crawls across the surfaces that allowed it to grow, with stunted mountain laurel taking root in the mossy nursery, and large brownish rock tripe lichens clinging here and there. A few aged white oak leaves sit in the moss, bug eaten and worn, and near the center sits an Ovenbird, the tiny stripy warbler pausing in its day. On the rock closest to us on the right is a metallic green colored Six-spotted tiger beetle. The artist watermark reads: copyright 2026 Jennifer Miller "Nambroth" featherdust dot com

When the sunbeam hits right but you're too luxurious to put a wing out

Oh no the baby spoon, too tiny and cute

Thank you!! The crows where I live are very shy, it must be quite something to have them be so close!

I make work in progress PDFs for my Patreon, BUT, I am happy to share any knowledge or process with artists if it would help them. I always want to share and help other artists!! Feel free to drop me an email and I'm happy to share them freely!

If I had local ravens that let me photograph them, the shiny would be out of control

I did have one snapshot of it, though it was after I scraped off all the crow/branch colors to make room for the background. I sometimes document my process and turn it into a PDF, if you'd ever like any of them emailed to you just let me know! Here's a screenshot:

Photos of the crow painting in the original post, shown in progress. The foreground is painted completely before the background is painted in. There is also a photo of a grey colored glass palette, covered in various paint piles with a small cup of oil near the top.

It is challenging for sure, but I like looking at and drawing/panting feathers so much that I will never stop. Thank you so much for the very thoughtful and wonderful comment!!!

Thank you! I was feeling very uninspired when I had them in a regular orientation, and on a whim I tried rotating them this way and suddenly I was excited to paint again! I was nervous about trying it, I'm so glad it seems to have worked out!

"Ruby-Crowned Kinglet Diamond" 4"x4" oil painting on panel A tiny bird seemed appropriate for the tiny painting size. I love kinglets and have had some really cool experiences with them. Their curiosity and tendency to mingle with groups of chickadees has led to some close encounters.

An oil painting of a Ruby-crowned kinglet in autumn. This little guy is so tiny and lightweight that it can easily stand on a stiff leaf, as this one is doing. They never stop moving for more than a brief moment. The artist watermark reads: Copyright 2026 Jennifer Miller "Nambroth", featherdust dot com

"Eastern Bluebird Diamond" 4"x4" oil painting on board I'm so fortunate to have bluebirds nesting next to my house, and they usually raise two broods.

The chickadees are always first here, but these guys are just after!
