I love working with undergraduates in my research into STEM teaching and learning. Her findings: that low-risk public communication assignments increase student engagement in an introductory biology class. #EduSky #AcademicSky

Brookfield says that faculty should start a new hobby every few years to keep themselves humble. Aikido does that for ever. Just passed my 2nd kyu test… #aikido

Turns out the AAC&U Transforming STEM conference is a pretty good place to go to deal with post-election anger and frustration. Plus they appreciated my presentation about making White students uncomfortable as a path to growth as allies.

My first STEM education paper with an undergraduate co-author: Sobel & Higgins: “Enhancing” Exam Wrappers with Research into Learning is Associated with a Shift in Study Strategies in a First Semester Biology Course, Journal of College Science Teaching: doi.org/10.1080/0047...
Comparison of students' study strategies for the second and fifth exams shows reduction in re-reading and increase in active strategies like drawing and forced recall.

Aoi Tischer presenting her analysis of University of Vermont student responses to discomfort when learning about the impact of racism in the US forensic sciences. Accepting discomfort leads to contemplation of personal and systemic change, as predicted by Boler in 1999 (pedagogy of discomfort).
