We have heard the very sad news that Nini Rodgers died yesterday, after a period spent in a nursing home. Her former colleagues in the School remember her fondly, while others will have known Nini through her ground-breaking research on the history of slavery and Ireland.

New from History UK: a valuable and interesting survey of UK history students use of and attitudes towards GenAI in HE teaching - their preliminary report is published today: bit.ly/4hatsRR The report is by Dr Sarah Jones and Dr Simon Peplow @simpep.bsky.social #skystorians
Opening page of History UK's statement on their survey and report on AI and History Students in UK universities. Full text:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become impossible to ignore in higher education. For historians, working in a discipline which depends on interpretation, evidence, and critical thinking, the development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has raised particularly significant questions. In 2026, we launched a survey to gather the perspectives of people who are often overlooked in considerations of the impact of AI and appropriate responses – history students themselves.

It’s 25 years since we lost Douglas Adams. I am happy to have been able to get a reference to him into this piece in the FT about why the humanities are essential www.ft.com/content/fbde...
It is 25 years since the death of Douglas Adams. He was prescient in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in
concluding that finding the answer to life, the universe and everything was not that difficult - it was 42. But the hard part was understanding the question. The humanities are here to help us make sense of the questions of our time.

'The Prisoners’ Lens: Secret Photography in Kilmainham Gaol, 1921', by Brian Crowley. More than 120 photographs taken secretly by political prisoners during the War of Independence offer a remarkable glimpse into life inside Kilmainham Gaol. historyireland.com/the-prisoner...
Using cameras smuggled into the prison, the prisoners documented boxing matches, Irish-language classes, religious services, dramatic performances and everyday moments of friendship and resilience. The images reveal an unexpected side of prison life and preserve the faces and stories of men caught up in one of the defining conflicts of modern Irish history. This image shows two male prisoners, leaning back against the wall of a call while sitting on a bunk, one with his arm around the others shoulders.
