when you see son-of-Hochuli is officiating your game:
Radney throws a wheel-route touchdown to Poole and the receivers begin lining up to perform their celebration even though it wasn’t actually a receiver who scored, but then the crowd is going crazy because there’s laundry on the field, and the referee nullifies the TD by making the universal arm gesture for holding while wearing a smug understated expression like he knows how big a call it is but just look at how lizardly calm he can still make himself be. Everyone knows this ref is particularly camera-whorish and that he believes he’s this major component of the game, and so he’s hamming up this call for a huge national audience by being so stern and cool, and that makes the Detroit sideline want to cause him physical harm.

“We used to have a dude like you.”
	“…”
“We called him Sunny Day. You know why?”
	“Where’s the head man at?”
“Oh, he don’t bother with dudes like you.”
	“…”
“Right, you think you good. You got that contract, you think you’re all set.”
	“Man, I know I’m good.”
	“Six games.”
	“Come on, man.”
“We called him Sunny Day ’cuz he only made it out there, like, every so often. This was over in Pittsburgh. Only get a few sunny days a year in Pittsburgh.”

One coach in one of these beheadings actually let slip the team’s scorn, keeping his voice neutral: “I had the equipment staff sneak into the room late at night just to check and make sure, but it turns out you ain’t actually been playing in cleats made outta concrete. Got to admit I was surprised.” Now he’s in his fourth organization.

He doesn't believe this nonsense. I said it on the show this week -- the less you consume ESPN poison in its many forms, the happier you will be. (I worked there 8 years, it is very different now.) You'll be amazed how much better your experience with sports is if you excise ESPN where you can.

"read Pound Foolish"
They make him defend the indefensible. An owner’s racist emails leak. Another owner is accused of sexual assault. A team’s shady financial records are unsealed. An imprisoned mob boss tells incriminating stories about an owner’s son. Cheerleaders are harassed by management. Stadium developers pay off a city council. In these small hours…can’t he admit he hates it? God, he hates it. He’s a titan at the head of a trillion-dollar industry and his job is to ignore and deflect until the noise from fans and media becomes too loud, at which point he puffs himself up like an apex predator and pretends to wield punishment. And then sometimes the billionaires don’t accept the punishment, and he looks like an imbecile.
	They pretend he’s in charge. He’s a $60-million-a-year piñata.
	It’s hard being a worm.

Off the lounge are a couple rooms that used to have beds for napping, but now are set up with gaming bays. The backup quarterbacks have each slipped on V.R. goggles and stand with a football in both hands, pivoting, aping their dropbacks, heads swiveling, presumably diagnosing coverage problems devised by a computer. Each QB has a pale fellow seated alongside reading data like in a lie-detector test.

“Morrison,” says the punter, “tell me you wouldn’t take this bet.” His widow’s peak is so severe it looks like a fuzzy mitten draped over his forehead.
	“…”
“Villagomez under two-and-a-half runs.” He shows Nick his phone. “Best pitcher in the National League against Pittsburgh? This idiot says don’t bet it.”
“Wind will be blowing out,” says the long snapper. “Always check the wind.”
	“Baseball?” Nick says.
“Yeah, the best edges are in baseball. And, like, rugby.”
	“…”
“Don’t worry, we don’t bet on football.”
“I really don’t think you’re supposed to bet on anything.”
“It’s fine,” says the long snapper. “They changed it. It’s okay now as long as it’s not football.”
	“I actually don’t think that’s true.”
“And also it’s my brother’s account,” Wyatt says.
The long snapper says, “Can you feel it? Our over/under is eight-and-a-half wins, they think we’re actually good. And can you believe like three-quarters of the money is on the over?”
“You know what that means,” says Wyatt. “Everyone believes in Stessa. They think he’s turning us around fast. It’s exciting. The city’s, like, vibrating.”
“It also means the books will be against us. If we get to nine wins, they’ll take a bath.”
	“What do you think, Morrison?”
He thinks these people should stop confessing stuff to him.

They’ve already warmed up on the field, but before the team can charge out there for real they also must listen to five ex-players—blue-blazered luminaries from the franchise’s very occasional successful eras—deliver homilies about ass-kicking, name-taking, tank-emptying, etc. These speakers begin with a wildly profane Wendell Vance and get progressively more stooped and gnarled, and this year’s players gaze at the carpet and nod and try to be reverent, but by the time 87-year-old Hall-of-Famer Blizzard Foley limps centerstage grasping the arm of an adult grandchild and squints up at the monsters a half-century his junior and opens his whitely dentured mouth to cough uncontrollably, what has mostly been communicated to the players is the certainty that they themselves will never get old or die.

This afternoon is not better and not worse than all other slices of time though it feels like every other Sunday is bound up in it: a history of Sundays tempered into the agreed-upon glorious shape. Dumb nervous excitement masquerades as happiness. There are joyous people up there, endless tiers of faces forgetting or remembering their pain. It’s all been happening forever.

When it first happened about a year ago—Sadler assaulting his girlfriend while deeply under the influence of illegal narcotics—the league quickly permitted its media moles to speculate aloud that Sadler would never play professional ball again. That talking point became football’s bulwark against accusations its players are out-of-control abusers: we know where the line is and we’re absolutely willing to draw it. Sadler sat out December. The commissioner grimly answered a single question about how tough the league was prepared to be, and thereafter refused to publicly engage the subject. Pundits pondering Green Bay’s future left Sadler out of it. Capologists theorized how his contract would be disposed of. Fans convinced themselves a new running back would make the team better anyway.
Then over the summer, Sadler’s agent went on a media tour. New details had come to light. It wasn’t so cut-and-dried. He didn’t want to engage in victim blaming, but the woman had a history. Plus Valentine had already materially suffered far beyond your standard innocent-until-proven-guilty accusee, and had undergone months of Narcotics Anonymous and anger management treatment. Long around training camp, authorities in Wisconsin revealed they were dropping criminal charges without saying more, but hardened football observers knew what it meant: the woman had stopped cooperating with the investigation. Nobody said anything conclusive. But everyone assumed Sadler paid her off. So in September the commissioner’s office declared its hands were tied. Without legal proceedings, without further charges, all the league could do was officially suspend Sadler under the auspices of collective bargaining: with time served, he’d be eligible to return late in the season.
	But damn.

It takes a special kind of lunacy to send out an A.I.-generated query that lies about everything, then follow it up with an A.I.-generated response that essentially says, "Yes, I was lying, but you should work with me anyway." (Anyway, my new book POUND FOOLISH comes out 9/1.)
"Totally fair question, and I'd wonder the same thing. That email is real, it's mine, not a scam. I do book marketing outreach for a living, and I email authors directly when a book genuinely stands out to me. Pound Foolish did, which is why the note was that specific."

...

"It's A.I., man. I know it's A.I. You know it's A.I.

The book isn't out yet. You didn't read it.

Sheesh."

...

Hi Christopher,

Fair catch, and you deserve a straight answer instead of another polished one.

I didn't read an advance copy. I build these outreach emails from public material, reviews, description, your other books, and yes, writing help, to figure out who might be a genuinely good fit to pich. That "what got me" framing was overstated. That's on me.

Where I wasn't making things up: your track record is real. Slotback Rhapsody, Tulsa, War On Sound, eight years at ESPN, the Publishers Weekly and Midwest Review recognition, an existing football audience that already trusts your voice. That's what actually made me want to reach out about Pound Foolish, not a cover-to-cover read I didn't do.

If you'd rather not hear from me again, I get it and I'll leave it there. If you're open to it, I'd still like to talk about actually getting the book in front of the right readers when it's out, on honest footing this time."

...

" "That's on me." Still A.I.

I think you should know that any self-respecting author will never work with someone who uses A.I.

Yeah, you can take me off your list."
