Despite his cold and sometimes domineering nature, he's really very passive. He kind of just lets things happen around him cause he already thinks the outcome is predetermined. He's def a "let me box up all my emotions and then die" kind of person.

Anyway, my main point is there is background evidence that she knew SJ had not been freed and she had reason to lie during the confrontation and does directly contradict events in the text. But, true, it is possible that you could take her at her word from that scene you posted.

Plus the fact that buying a slave to marry was a practice from at least the Han Dynasty on, so this would have been a well known and established thing for her. Like I said earlier, I do think she may have thought this a good thing genuinely, and may not have know about the abuse at all.

You can see that SJ thinks he needs QJL’s permission to leave, even tho he can walk out theoretically whenever he wants cause he’s been meeting with WYZ. I just don’t think QHT is so naive to not notice SJ acting as slave, like he does in this example, and not a member of the family. But YMMV

Not to be *that guy*, but QHT didn't think SJ was freed, she thought QJL bought him for her to marry. QJL still owned him. That being said, this is depicted as a regular practice and would likely have elevated SJs position so it is plausible that QHT thought it was a good thing and SJ would be happy
