Almost amused to see how many people are misinterpreting this as me saying that any use of any tech sold as "AI" is the moral equivalent of CSAM. (NB: Some use of "AI" is literally for producing CSAM, which is tragic.) >>

Yes, because it is really important to smoke, try heroin, download CSAM (!!!), or burn plastic, etc etc to be able to discuss the dangers and harms of those activities.

One of the things that really shines through in these AI debates is how many of the antis refuse to actually use or touch the thing they're trying to criticize, which leads to claims that have this religious tenor and bear no resemblance whatsoever to real-world manifestations of AI.

One of the key messages I carry is that we don't have to accept any of this. Sometimes I see opposition in the form of "Get in loser, you'll be left behind" and other times it's in the form of "It's all over the place, what do you mean you think you can opt out?" >>

Software engineering could and should be done with the same care as any other type of engineering. This is a post in honor of Margaret Hamilton (and also a subtweet of all vibe-coders everywhere).
Screencap

"“I fought to bring the software legitimacy so that it — and those building it — would be given its due respect, and thus I began to use the term ‘software engineering’ to distinguish it from hardware and other kinds of engineering, yet treat each type of engineering as part of the overall systems engineering process,” Hamilton told El Pais in 2018. “When I first started using this phrase, it was considered to be quite amusing. It was an ongoing joke for a long time. They liked to kid me about my radical ideas. Software eventually and necessarily gained the same respect as any other discipline.”"

Okay, I propose a slogan for this: "Janky until proven functional, period." And note that that assumes HIGH standards for functionality, established in the specific use case.
@emilymbender.bsky.social@emilymbender.bsky.social
But speaking of staying in one's lane, can we PLEASE switch the default position from "It's fine to use 'AI' for this thing I'm not an expert in" to "Yeah, I'd be really skeptical of any use cases and need to see strong evidence that it's okay, but I'm not the one who can produce that evidence"?

Screencap of the email, with idiosyncratic punctuation intact but sender's name cut off:

"professor Bender,
I am an internationally recognized expert on AI; particularly machine learning and computer vision. I started work in this area in 1987 and have continued to the present...with some gaps...i am completely current. Most of my recent work focuses on use of Ai for medical applications. i believe your book is grossly inaccurate in its depiction of AI, clearly this area of work is beyond your comprehension. Dont you realize that progress in research in every possible discipline is being greatly accelerated by AI? I look forward to your feedback"

No two words send AI industry advocates into fits of rage more than "stochastic parrots." The question is: Why? Why do they get so worked up over this particular critical framework time and time again? I sat down with @emilymbender.bsky.social, one of the coauthors of the original paper, to discuss

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.
