One of our members picked a new student debt plan to join yesterday, according to their deadline. Today, they got a notification saying they’ll be put into a “new repayment plan.” Is the “new” plan the same plan as yesterday? Or is the “new” plan a NEW new plan? Nobody knows.

Say you don't have to leave the SAVE plan by December 31. You essentially have three more months of non-payment. But then you see your *Attorney's General* tweet accurate information. So you leave the plan and start making payments months early.

When Schmitt was Missouri's AG he brought a lawsuit to stop student debt cancellation. The basic facts that lawsuit was based on were false. Getting the facts wrong is Schmitt's special skill, but when SCOTUS is politically motivated to do something the facts & law don't matter.

Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of student debtors are being kicked off an affordable repayment plan and put into more expensive plans tomorrow. Many are trying to find payment plans that work for them. Here's the repayment calculator today.

Secretary McMahon just publicly confirmed that she will reverse some student debt payment credit debtors had received toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This is essentially reinstating student loans—which is illegal.

These are the types of hurdles student debtors are forced to jump through every single day to try to avoid being financial bankruptcy. This Department of Education is just broken.
Jordan recently filed for forbearance under her new income-driven repayment plan because she could not make the nearly $4,000 payments. The forbearance process, like everything else, was confusing. Reading from notes she recorded this spring, she cited a day in which she called her servicer, Nelnet, seven times and after a series of disconnections, strange messages, and wrong numbers, gave up.

A week later, when she was finally able to connect, an automated voice said there was no record of her in their accounts. So overwhelmed was she that she gave up entirely, questions unanswered, and did her best to navigate her request for forbearance alone.

Jordan might remain in forbearance until next year, as one letter from Nelnet told her, or she might need to recertify in November, which she was told in a different letter. She doesn’t know. Like everyone else, she’s in limbo.

Student loans are breaking *again.* This time, debtors enrolled in the SAVE plan have received a wrongful message claiming they've missed months of payments and are now delinquent. This isn't true. It's a wrongful message—and another massive error. Payments should be paused.

A student debt lawsuit led by Debt Collective members continues to reveal Ed Dept incompetence. There are 4 plaintiffs. Lawyers submitted 5 additional debtor declarations as a case update. DOJ responded saying looking at *5* more accounts is too "time-consuming" and "tedious."

The Department of Education has been telling folks they *must* leave the SAVE student debt plan by July 1. But days ago, Nelnet quietly updated their FAQ page noting some debtors' 90-day clock to leave the SAVE plan won't begin until 2027. They've been lying about the timeline.
Q: When will I receive my 90-day notice?

A: Nelnet is notifying nearly three million Nelnet borrowers, so we're reaching out in waves. You'll receive your notice between July 2026 and March 2027.

The Department of Education is sending confusing emails to debtors saying they're adjusting debtors' student loan interest rates — which will go into effect from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. Except... we are beyond those dates. Those dates are now historical.

There are dozens of news articles about how student debtors can get a "discount" on their student loans by enrolling in auto-pay, but who will follow up with a story that enrolling in auto-pay doesn't work?
2175
Debt Collective 🟥 @debtcollective.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
There's a massive disconnect happening—and it's been happening for years. The Department of Education rolls out a half-baked idea with no implementation. Press publish it as if it's fact. It doesn't work. Debtors are left worse off and confused. Lawmakers shrug. Nothing works.
192
Debt Collective 🟥 @debtcollective.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Weeks ago, the Ed Dept announced that federal student debtors who enroll in auto pay will be eligible for a 1% interest rate reduction. That turned out to be a scam. Debtors are met with a "you can't" message when trying to enroll. The entire loan system is dysfunctional.

Of course Third Way isn't opposed to all forms of debt cancellation. Third Way got nearly a million dollars of debt canceled by the government for themselves. They just oppose cancellation for working class students by spreading myths about who actually has student debt.
A screenshot showing that Third Way got $982,062 of debt cancelled by the government.
1349
Debt Collective 🟥 @debtcollective.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
The person who wrote this is very unlikely to have gotten $10,000 of cancellation because they are very likely to have zero student debt. Third Way paid them $300,000 last year for spreading these kinds of myths about what college students are like.
A screenshot of a paragraph of text highlighted in blue for emphasis that reads:

"Why should someone like me with several higher ed degrees get a $10,000 check from the government while the person who cleans my house who has never been able to enroll gets a big fat nothingburger? Democrats have been hemorrhaging support among non-college voters of all races, and this is the perfect way to cement the notion that we’re out of touch."

Debt Collective 🟥 @debtcollective.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
Now contrast all of this with what @thirdway.bsky.social said when they opposed student debt cancellation? "It's a regressive giveaway that primarily benefits upper middle class people who attended elite four year colleges."
A screenshot of text that reads:

WASHINGTON — Third Way released the following statement from Lanae Erickson, Senior Vice President for Social Policy and Politics:

""Blanket debt forgiveness is bad policy and bad politics. It's a regressive giveaway that primarily benefits upper middle class people who attended elite four year colleges. And there's nothing about that which will help Democrats appeal to the bulk of black, white, and Latinx voters who don't have a degree. They want policies that equip them with skills so they can earn a good life, not ones that shovel more tax dollars only to the four-year degree holders who are already doing well in this changing economy.""

College students are overworked, stressed out, and are providing care to family or loved ones.
A screenshot of a paragraph of text from this article: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2026/06/26/regional-public-universities-rpu-poll/

The paragraph reads as follows:

"One reason RPU students are less involved in political activism may be that they have too many other responsibilities. For example, 71 percent were working either part-time (54 percent) or full-time (17 percent). A third either had children under 18 to take care of or were caregivers for their parents or another family member. Almost half (48 percent) of RPU students report attending religious services regularly."

Many students are dealing with real poverty, to the degree where they are unable to eat without access to food pantries or SNAP (which is being cut thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill).
A screenshot of a paragraph of text from this article: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2026/06/26/regional-public-universities-rpu-poll/

The paragraph reads as follows:

"Sometimes, financial pressures forced students to rely on special resources to meet basic needs. More than a third (37 percent) had used their campus food pantry, and among students who felt they were “just getting by” or having “difficulty getting by,” more than two-thirds had turned to this resource."

The second sentence is highlighted in blue for emphasis.A screenshot of a paragraph from the following article:

"Nearly four in five students (78 percent) were concerned that a financial emergency would prevent them from continuing their college education. Some 32 percent said they had used food stamps, SNAP, or TANF, and 12 percent had relied on emergency housing support at some point while in college. That’s above the rate the general public uses these programs."

The final sentace is highlighted in blue for empahsis.

This article dispels a lot of the myths in the media and public consciousness about who college students really are. Instead of being rich kids at ivy league schools, they are stressed out, overworked, and financially struggling.
A screenshot of a paragraph from this article: https://washingtonmonthly.com/2026/06/26/regional-public-universities-rpu-poll/

The paragraph reads as follows:

"One reason RPU students might not realize they’re getting a relative bargain is that costs remain high compared to what they can afford. More than half (52 percent) described themselves as “just getting by,” and another 13 percent were “finding it difficult to get by.” Only 34 percent said they lived “comfortably.”"

The final two sentences are highlighted in blue for empahsis.

Debt cancellation via SAVE is to be administered automatically. But the DOJ is saying just because a law existed for 99 minutes doesn't mean you should get the benefit. Well. That's not really an argument. The DOJ motion to dismiss says, essentially, "we don't care."

Extremely wild clause in a bill House Republicans are set to vote on Tuesday. It would eliminate funding by "any local education agency" to conduct school shooter drills for kids under 16 years old.
SEC. 317. None of the funds made available in this Act may be used by any local education agency to conduct student-involved active shooter drills in schools without first providing student participants under 16 years old with the ability to opt out of such exercises with parental or legal guardianship consent
