@govjayinslee.bsky.social reflects on meeting a man whose home was destroyed in the Spokane fires this summer. “I thought about his courage, and contrasted it by the rank cowardice of the executives of these oil companies, who [are] now too cowardly to accept responsibility for this."

Attribution science is a "robust body of evidence that we can bring to the courtroom, that we can trace emissions back to the impacts that people are experiencing today," explains Dr. Pallavi Phartiyal of @ucs.org. This is "why the fossil fuel industry is so scared of this research.”

Colorado ranchers are calling on SCOTUS to allow Boulder’s case against Big Oil companies to move forward. “Climate change is not an abstract possibility, but a lived reality that is threatening the economic viability of a way of life that has been central to communities for generations.”

It would be "improper" for SCOTUS to deny Boulder its day in court against Big Oil, says @coattnygeneral.bsky.social and 18 other state AGs. 👏 From Big Tobacco to Big Pharma, there's a long history of state law holding "corporations accountable when they inflict broad-based harms" on communities.

Big Oil is lobbying Congress for legal immunity. We’re out here raising the alarm. 📢❗🚨 Our team spoke with leaders from across the country at @ncslorg.bsky.social last week about Big Oil's historic and ongoing climate deception — and why our ability to hold the industry accountable is under threat.

How a 1996 study on methane emissions from natural gas—published by the gas industry in partnership with the U.S. EPA—allowed the oil and gas industry to fend off emissions regulations, cement the myth of “clean” natural gas, and pave the way for the 2000s fracking boom. 👀

Shell and other oil companies were aware DECADES AGO of extensive, global methane pollution caused by their operations. Instead of addressing this problem, the industry worked to position natural gas as "clean" and transform it from a marginal fuel into a driving force of the energy sector. 🫨

Whenever we post about holding Big Oil accountable for the climate crisis, we'll inevitably get comments saying climate change is “a lie” or that we can't “live one day without fossil fuels.” Probably no one leaving these comments realizes they’re repeating Big Oil’s talking points word for word. 😑

As wildfires continue to rage across the West, let’s not forget that Big Oil companies predicted decades ago that their products would fuel these disasters. Instead of warning the public, they chose to bury the science, spread climate denial, and to delay the transition to cleaner energy sources.
