American Robin

At first I didn't know it had a name
except to say bird and to know the difference

from human. Mostly, it's that I can't fly—
can't make a nest with my mouth

from twigs, feathers, paper—
dead leaves, coarse grasses are just that to me.

I can't even begin to smear it all with mud to shape
an oval, or to offer up blue eggs, then wait.

Above, she's perched on a telephone wire,
some worm or grub squirming from her beak,

her young balanced in a nest testing on the cornice
of my porch—three little necks stretch up,

three heads bob down, then up,
soft beaks open—such trust, unshakeable

belief in a world reduced to a blur
of orange breast coming and going

where only one song carries a melody
worth listening for and to think of anything more

than this sensation and shade is inconceivable,
the broken light refracted through the leaves,

and the leaves breaking with the wind
touching them without touch.

Everything's of purpose, divine,
as in the middle of a bud

where a name is called and blooms,
destined to bring forth the flower

or the bird, and I can't even explain why
I'm watching her feed her young—

her offering, their taking, again and again
from one open mouth to another.book resting on gray-clad, crossed legs: the cover art uses an illustration for "Down-Adown-Derry (Walter de la Mare, 1922) by Dorothy Lathrop, colored into dark blue and matte gold: a slender figure with flying, curly hair dances off a stylized street or path into a star-studded night. The figure seems to emit a cloud of stars as well (a bit like Tinker Bell).

AHP is pleased to announce that Jessie Petrow-Cohen's collection, This Middle Living, has been selected by Ira Sukrungruang as the winner of the 2026 Nonfiction Prize. Of the book, Ira says: "This Middle Living speaks a universal truth: grief never leaves..."
Infographic with award title, author name and author photoInfographic with award winning citation: “This Middle Living is so much more than one woman’s search for self in the face of grief and the pain that grief cleaves. It is more than how to negotiate the empty spaces—literal and metaphorical—of the ones you have come to need. It is more than a book about need. . . . With such sharp prose, The Middle Living speaks a universal truth: grief never leaves; it’s how to make room for it in the new configuration of our lives as days, months, years tick by.”

Ode to Humidity

What am I if not what happens
when I try to run away?

Water falls out of me like
an opinion. I'm like a screen
door banging between two rivers.

Dear air, what's inside me
you're so desperate to take?

I put on the Atlantic like a sweater.
My head bobs on the surface
of a lake I'm named after.

Where do I belong?
My head asks. My body
exasperated, answers.
