Important read! Kudos to @lutzfernandez.bsky.social, @rethinkingschools.bsky.social for making these dangers known to teachers, parents, ed faculty! Hope to see more on the topic, including why @aft.org "partnering" with the tech moguls to push AI is a betrayal of public education.

This seems like a solid educational goal for our fascist present: To turn kids into “angry revolutionaries who want to topple society.”

After being accused of masterminding an uprising, "Ferrer was sentenced and executed in 1909... There was a huge protest movement against Ferrer's execution, which could be situated as a kind of a predecessor movement to the Sacco and Vanzetti movement of the 1920s.” - @mark-bray.bsky.social
Photo of a "pro-Ferrer demonstration in Brussels, 1909" (from Bray's book), followed by text: "In 1909, a general strike morphed into an anti-clerical uprising, and “Ferrer was accused of being the mastermind of the whole thing. … He was a key scapegoat and was ultimately arrested, very quickly sentenced and executed in 1909. This made him a global name and it catapulted the book which he wrote, which was published not long after his death, into this kind of global political manual for radical education. ... There was a huge protest movement against his execution as well, which I think could be situated as a kind of a predecessor movement to the Sacco and Vanzetti movement of the 1920s.” - Mark Bray

"The school shut down because Ferrer was arrested as an alleged conspirator in the plan to kill the king in 1906. He was actually acquitted of the charges. ... He went into exile for a few years, where he wrote the Modern School book that became his most famous work.” - @mark-bray.bsky.social
Image of "Ferrer arriving at his trial" from Nuevo Mundo, June 6, 1907. FFG (from Bray's edited book), followed by text: "“ Ultimately, the school shut down because Ferrer was arrested as an alleged conspirator in the plan to kill the king in 1906. He was actually acquitted of the charges. There is no definitive evidence that he was one of the planners of this assassination attempt, although there is a lot of circumstantial evidence, and I believe he was probably involved. But nevertheless, the school closed. It was never reopened, and he went into exile for a few years, where he wrote the Modern School book that became his most famous work.” - Mark Bray

“ One of the ways that some scholars have argued that Ferrer's model couldn't really be completely co-opted is because of his unrelenting emphasis on explicitly radical values in the curriculum.” - @mark-bray.bsky.social

The French anarchist, Grandjouan, "argues that in capitalist society you really can't have a rationalist school, that it’s just too corroded by the values of society. And so instead... you should just breed class hatred in children... make them angry revolutionaries" - @mark-bray.bsky.social
Images: illustrations by Jules Grandjouan - 1) a woman holding a red flag with text of words in French, including "Semaine Internationale des Femmes"; 2) a yellow octopus with the word "Capital" written on it, a portly man in a suit next to the octopus, in front of a sea of people holding red flags; with the title "la Voix du peuple", followed by text:
"“One of my favorite essays in the book was written by this French anarchist, Grandjouan, where he argues that in capitalist society you actually really can't have a rationalist school, that it’s just too corroded by the values of society. And so instead of trying to do so, you should just breed class hatred in children. Just make them, on a literal level, angry revolutionaries who want to topple society, and then you can build an equitable school that can pursue free thought.”

“The Ferrerian model was very influential through the modern school movement around the world after Ferrer’s death, in the 1910s, 1920s, and was the model that the Spanish Revolution put in practice in the 1930s for how to create anti-authoritarian schools.” - @mark-bray.bsky.social

“ Mateo Morral, the guy who tried to kill the king in 1906—for which Ferrer was accused of being an accomplice—worked in the Modern School’s publishing house." - @mark-bray.bsky.social

Followed by text: "“ Mateo Morral, the guy who tried to kill the king in 1906—for which Ferrer was accused of being an accomplice—worked in the Modern School’s publishing house.
... The Modern School students went on field trips, like to factories and stuff. You see a lot of modernist, workerist optimism about the ability of labor and industry to liberate humanity. In fact, on a humorous note, Mateo Morral, Ferrer's collaborator, was the son of an industrialist in Catalonia, and so one of the field trips was to his dad's factory. And he famously tried to encourage his dad's workers to organize a union, and they were very weirded out by that.” - Mark Bray

“Ferrer had a short, medium, and long-term vision of social transformation—the long-term vision being the school: if you want to get rid of these oppressive values and institutions, you need to educate younger generations who can come into the world with better ideas.” - @mark-bray.bsky.social
