The Inclusive Classroom Submit proposals here | Deadline: October 7, 2027, 11:59 PM PDT At a time when more than half of US states have passed legislation that have dismantled Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion DEI offices and even prohibited DEI subjects in required courses, how can Political Scientists meaningfully engage students in such restrictive environments? This track seeks submissions that grapple with teaching DEI-related material, adopting inclusive & equitable practices in the classroom, and building institutional support for inclusive practices.

The causes and consequences of polarization are under intense debate and scrutiny at the macrolevel. However, at the micro-level of our classrooms and campuses, teaching in this polarized environment becomes front and center with our students who may vigorously express, or quietly reserve, their views on political actors, institutions, and the short and long-term consequences of political outcomes.

High Impact and Practices  2027 APSA Teaching & Learning Conference Portland, Oregon, February 5-7, 2027 Submit proposals here Deadline: October 7, 2026, 11:59 PM PDT High Impact practices are effective pedagogical techniques that have significant impacts on student learnings. This track seeks to explore how high impact practices can prepare students to be participatory democratic citizens.  These practices could include the value of capstone courses, active learning techniques, e-portfolios, undergraduate research programs, experiential learning, internships, service-learning, writing, problem-based learning, collaborating across differences, independent research or study abroad experiences.

Meet Crystal Robertson, University of California, Irvine Project Title: Saviors or Scapegoats: Black Women in the Democratic Party Crystal Robertson, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Irvine. Before this she was a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow. She earned her PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles with concentrations in American politics and race, ethnicity, and politics.

Join political science teacher-scholars and students for a unique meeting to promote greater understanding of high-impact practices and innovative methodologies for the political science classroom.

In an effort to bring attention to exceptional scholarship, many of APSA Organized Sections have established awards. Currently there are more than 200 such awards honoring dissertations, papers, articles, books and career achievement. Winners are generally selected by member committees appointed by the chair or executive committee of the section. The organized section recognize winners at their annual business meetings, which are held in conjunction with the APSA Annual Meeting.
